We are traveling to Rome next month. We want to go see Vatican and Coliseum. We booked the Vatican tour but do we need to book something for the coliseum or can we just walk up and go in and see it?

Rome is amazing. There’s so much to take in. The Vatican is a full day commitment.

Vehicle traffic in Rome is limited to people with specific permits or who live in the city center.

We found a US born private guide to take us around and it was worth every penny. Cut through much of the lines and saw far more than we would have otherwise.

Do the Walks of Italy Coliseum tour. Choose the one with the lower level access. You can’t just walk into the coliseum.

If you can do it- that same company also offers a “Pristine Sistine” Vatican tour. I HIGHLY recommend this. If I remember correctly we were done by early afternoon and never felt rushed. We also did the Scavi tour that same day.

Be warned, once you've seen the outside of Tiger Stadium, the Coliseum is a let down.

Unless you look at that abomination of a design from the west side parking lot. The Coliseum is an historic place, but they can use some upgrades, not to mention the lack of video boards.

You need a tour guide. Better to book in advance. Small group or even private tour is best. Agree with getting lower level access.

I have been to Rome twice and been underwhelmed both times. I want to like it, but it just feels like one giant tourist trap.

That’s what I’m afraid of. The obviously we have to see the coliseum and the Vatican, but we’re only there to catch a cruise

I get it. Rome certainly has this. As does London, Paris, Barcelona, etc.

Much of Europe’s really big cities have felt more and more like tourist traps.

I did the Baltics earlier this year. Definitely picturesque and certainly not very touristy. I really enjoyed it. I think you’ll see more and more travelers bypassing the old historic mega tourist draws in favor of these hidden gems as time goes on.

I’m heading back to Eastern Europe in the Spring to hopefully get more of the same.

I'll be there in 3 weeks. After doing some research and talking to some folks who did it, I booked a City Wonders tour of Colosseum and Forum through Viator. Starts at 9am and goes about 3 hours. It was about $65 a person when I booked it a couple months ago.

Whatever you do, please don't carve/scratch your school's name into the *Colosseum. Was last there in 2008 and some dipshit Aggie had carved "aTm" into it.

I had the same experience. I thought Rome was very dirty in general, graffiti everywhere, etc.. You would look at what you think would be a historic landmark and it would have trash and graffiti all over it.

Like all of Europe the locals ought to tear all of that old shite down and build some new shite, amiright??? We get it, we get it, your shite is old. So what? Who cares? Enough with the old shite....build something new for crying out loud...

Rome is cool, but if you go stand by the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish steps each time, of course it will. I did a tour of the Jewish Ghetto that included food, wine, synagogue, and landmarks. That was pretty bad arse. Tratavere was super cool at night. It’s not my favorite European city, but it’s cool. Now, I wanted to enjoy Naples, but I didn’t realize I was going to be in Europes Baton Rouge

Naples

Hell to the no. We flew Space-A into Sigonella in the 90s and stayed with a family on the outskirts of town. Leave your car doors unlocked, so at least they don't break your window. And traffic rules are for sissies, I learned.

One good thing about Rome is it will teach you how to drive. I've used this before, but a coworker in Rome told me a common joke:

Lemmy, do you know what a nanosecond is? It's the amount of time between when the light turns green and people behind you start honking.

I think you have to see the main sights and then get lost in the actually city.

It is a very jarring city at first. I had been living in NYC when I first went there, so it’s not that I was not used to a big city, but Rome just felt like chaos at first. So much so that I thought about leaving barely a day into my trip there.

Something happened over the next few days though, and I really enjoyed my time there.

I read the reviews in Naples but I figured people might be mistaking authenticity for trashiness. I also really love pizza and espresso, so I mapped out some of the best places in the city and did a purposeful long layover there to check them out. It was super sketchy and after the second place I went and hung out at the train station. I’d have touched it out if I weren’t with my wife. But, it’s as bad as people say
