NIL was a terrible idea

Too bad that genie will never go back in the bottle. Thank God for high school sports.

No it wasn't. There's no reason someone famous like Caleb Williams shouldn't be allowed to make money doing commercials for big brands like Dr. Pepper, Wendy's etc.
The issue is the NCAA was so feckless and worthless that they never even tried to create a regulatory framework and now guys doing commercials is the same as someone getting paid to sign with a school by a fake charity collective.

You are confusing pay for play and NIL. They are used as the same but 1 is legal and 1 technically isn't. The issue is the NCAA is powerless and everyone uses NIL for P4P. So we have a bunch of kids who are paid and don't play hard. Instead of getting some of their jersey sells or able to do a commercial if the market creates the opportunity for them.

The value of an undergraduate diploma has diminished too much to think it's a worthwhile return for 2-4 years of the work these football players put in. That wasn't always the case, but it is now. They should be compensated.

That stopped being the case in the early 90’s

The power players have changed to corporate NIL donations instead of individual under the table payers. This shift is seen as parity.
So some of the old power houses have less talent and some of the 2nd tier powers are now top tier powers. The issue is the middle to bottom tier powers are farther behind the top tier powers.

Props for the unique take. Haven’t thought of that. Still, for football, NIL is 100% bribes for player to sign with, or stay with, team.

Cool
And your national champion in 2023 will be either Michigan, Ohio State, Georgia, etc

Look no further than what Alabama is going through right now

Let the NIL 4 year cycle complete and the power players will be USC, Texas, A&M, Miami. Ohio St, Michigan, Georgia, Bama will still be there but be 2nd tier and not as talented.

No I'm saying that the power players at the top are changing but the gap to the middle of the pack to bottom is growing. Some people see that as parity because Alabama is getting worse but they are just not as powerful in the NIL world as they were in the under the table world.
Their warchest is a lot less in comparison to other schools who now will be invested now that it is legal.

Idea was not bad, the execution has been terrible.

I think eventually the genie might go back in the bottle after Jaden Rashada and the Ohio State news of kids demanding 5 stacks just to visit. It’ll get worse before it gets better unfortunately

I think the idea of NIL was well intentioned. If companies are making millions selling a player’s jersey etc, the players should be able to make some money off of that. The problem is now you have kids getting straight up signing bonuses to play for schools under the guise of “NIL”. It’s not, it’s just paying recruits to commit and sign.
