Colorado’s transfer rules will be a major hurdle for Coach Prime

I’ve said on the Coaching Changes board that Colorado was a bad choice for Deion as his first P5 job. A lot has to do with the PAC 12 in general and CU specifically not caring about football.

Their transfer requirements are another major issue. In the portal era, CU is heavily hamstrung. They are discussing changes, but that will take years.

Chancellor Phil DiStefano's response to why Colorado has struggled to bring in transfers:

“I don’t think it is a matter of altering any of the rules and policies. I believe that you can have excellent academics and excellent student-athletes coming together. They are not mutually exclusive.
“On the transfer piece, it is just based upon the degrees we offer. And the way that faculty own the curriculum, they own the degrees so when a student wants to transfer, for example, we do not have physical education here, and we do not have general education, and to be honest, that’s not going to change.
“What we must do is go and recruit those student athletes coming from junior colleges who can play for us and can transfer in the credits. It may take a little bit more work, but I have confidence in our coaches to be able to do that. I mean we have brought in transfers and that has worked. And I think we will continue to bring in transfers, it is just the transfers must have the transfer credits that will transfer.”

How CU loses out on potential transfers
[quote]
As Phil DiStefano derisively noted, CU doesn’t have a PE or general studies degree. Most other schools, including most of the AAU schools CU likes to associate itself with, do have general studies and/or integrated studies degrees. As a result, transferring between those schools much easier easy, as they offer many of the same courses.
Simply put, CU doesn’t offer certain programs that are popular among student-athletes.

quote:

What that results in
…the percentage of non-graduate transfers who can successfully find their way through the CU admissions office is painfully low. Adam Munsterteiger of BuffStampede.com reported that CU coaches submitted a list of 11 wide receiver transfer candidates for academic appraisal this past offseason, only four came back with approval for CU with permission to recruit.

I’m not high on him as a P5 coach, but he can succeed in the right situation. Colorado is not it.

I hope I’m wrong.

And this is some of the stuff that I doubt was even brought up to him. With how he talked to the team in the first meeting and the introductory press conference, he’s acting like he’s got all kinds of players coming with him. I think he already ran off a bunch of current Colorado players with how he talked to them in that first meeting telling them he already has players coming with him for their positions.
It would not surprise me to see a bunch of those players leave and his transfers not qualify.

Ain’t nobody attending Colorado for a prestigious education, but that doesn’t stop their aloof administration and moon-bat professors from pretending they are the Harvard of the Rockies (but more socially and environmentally conscious, so they freely hand out humanities and liberal arts degrees).

Yea, I doubt he did much research. I imagine few Jackson State players will be able to come, if any. Maybe his son.

How long before the narrative starts that CU is racist because they won’t admit black football players because their degree is not part of the CU curriculum?

Clearly he didn’t think this through.. or he’s just going to take the money and fall upward in 3 or 4 years

That may be ok for incoming freshmen, but a junior transfer with two years of PE won’t be able to come.

I think it’s crazy y’all think he doesn’t know/didn’t know all this. He’s clearly a guy that has had a plan and options and chose Colorado. No idea if his coaching can translate to P5 football on a competitive level, but I have zero doubt he’s going to pull blue chip transfers and recruits while he is there.

Quite a few people have been on DiStefano's arse about this the last few years. It's going to change sooner than later.

If they're motivated enough to get Prime I don't see any reason why they wouldn't aim fix most of the above pretty quickly.

Agree, he is a multimillionaire and has been a successful football player, businessman, and a coach. Don’t be so naïve to think he does not understand the situation he is getting into right now.

Is his nickname Prime or Primetime? I always heard it as Primetime until recently.

I think you give him too much credit after that prime prep debacle.

They are paying almost 6M per year with a 5M assistant pool.

My guess is they are going to make the changes.
