A realists’ take on our present circumstances

Might be a shite take but here it is:
- no DB signing in O’s last two seasons had us vulnerable from the word go.
- glaring LB issues pre Kelly era and we’ve seen improved play.
- we get some promising transfers at CB but one of the projected starters gets hurt
- d-line coach goes down right before season and we stick a ST new hire as DL guy and thus explains lack of dominant DL
- offense comes alive after first loss
- one of the bright spots in our secondary has medical emergency
- complex scheme without the bodies to run it. They’re playing under lots of pressure and therefore playing slower.
= where we are at now. We simply do not have the bodies to do what they’re trying to do. Ideally, we see some adjusting, but, it’s going to be one of them years.

Last one is ridiculous.
Adjust with what you have. The scheme shouldn’t mean we are tackling a greased pig every play.

There is a lot of truth to that. But the defensive coaches don’t seem to be doing anything to mitigated it.
We all know there is a talent deficit in the secondary. But that doesn’t mean it should be THIS BAD or why the D line looks awful.
Losing the D line coach shouldn’t result in how bad they are playing.

All of that is reasonable, but it still blows my mind how terrible this defense is. Like impressively terrible.

Completely agree. The defense has been horrendous. I’m sorry but there’s no other way to phrase it.

That is a reasonable take.

CHAVIS (LOL) AND aranda would have this defense running press man and mix in simple shite if we got lit up like last night. Go back to the drawing board

then don't run it. Simplify it

I appreciate your authenticity, but we’re looking a historically bad defense. What you’ve cited is grounds for us to have, perhaps, the worst defense in 10, maybe 15 years. It is not grounds for us to have the worst defense in LSU history. Maybe they turn it around, but that’s what we are on pace for as of now.

For me, the inexcusable part is sticking with the same scheme knowing we can’t pull it off.
Posted on 10/1/23 at 2:18 pm to TaderSalad
There has to be SOMETHING that LSU can do to limit opposing offenses to 700 yards or less.

Also had to get db's to replace the ones that left so is that good or bad? Plus it's your view and I guess you aren't an AI so you are real, players get hurt every year, Kelly hires a guy for DL that doesn't want to be here and leaves etc etc , I'm not saying fire anybody but...

This is as sympathetic a look as on e can make for the coaching staff.
And excessively so.
Most of your excuses deal with poor secondary talent and poor recruiting there.
Who is responsible?

Please stop the BS. Orgeron signed Ricks & McGlothern. Kelly ran off Mcglothern who was our best CB. O also signed Ryan, Toles, McGhee, and Derrick Davis within in last 2 classes. All top 10 DBs at their position.
We had solid LB recruiting and play under O. We had three 1st round LBs under Orgeron. Clark arguably was a 2nd rd prospect before his spinal surgery. Clark & Baskerville was pretty solid together in 2021.
The only significant improvement we've had under Kelly is our offensive line depth/play & TE depth/play. Everything else has been taken a step back.

Lost me on the AI bit, but yes injuries do happen. Point being, it’s hard to overcome two starters going down on a depleted defense.
House needs to pull everyone’s background on defense and make whatever they’re comfortable with work. Can’t get worse.

Most of those factors you can’t do anything about mid season.
But you can definitely change the scheme.

Hunnit percent.
That’s the mind boggling part for me. My biggest gripe with CBK is that he makes adjustments in offseason… it’s the CEO (not Ed o) approach.
Gotta be hands on in SEC play.

just tackling and taking the correct angles would improve the defense at least 50%.

This is a bad take. We have the personnel to be better on Defense. Sorry but we are NOT this bad. There is something else besides talent causing this. It could be the wrong mix of guys at the wrong positions. But our players are playing pretty awful and CAN absolutely play better.
First of all stop sitting guys for being set up in bad situations. Harris and Ryan need to sit the bench. They are not our best players period and they routinely get over matched in the physical piece of the game. Both mental and physical. Sit those two and find someone else. Secondly… STOP giving WRs 10 yards of cushion on every damn play. They actually give them more because they back pedal for 5 more yards after the snap. Shorten that up to 5 yards or stop back peddling because these WRs just break the route off and then they have 3-5 yards to make a move after the catch. We have to be closer to the damn ball when the catch is made, period.
3rd the DL, LBs and DBs all need to run drills on how to pursue the ball carrier in front of them. Whether that’s the QB for the DL/LBs/DBs, the RB for the DL/LBs/DBs or a WR for the LBs/DBs. They need to practice how to keep the ball carrier squared with them, make the ball carrier move laterally so it gives your team time to join and the ball carrier isn’t moving north/south beyond the first defender. After they’ve done that, they need to run drills on how to wrap up the ball carrier and send them to the ground or stop all forward motion.
They are moving way too fast toward the ball carrier then missing when they side step or leaving their feet because the ball carrier is now moving past them. Square up, wrap up, drive down with quickness. Let them watch teams that do it well and then go run drills. Bring someone to practice that does it well and let them follow their instruction. Bring an old LSU DB to practice and watch them defense man and zone. Bring some of our best LBs and DL man to practice and show these kids how to do it right. Having an LSU alumn to show them might just help. We can get better and I don’t believe Tulane has better players than LSU, yet they played better defense. It’s a mix of scheme, personnel and playing the right way.

OP sounds like Kelly. Just a bunch of excuses. Let’s just blame Coach O. It’s all his fault
