We are going to have to throw the bag at Maason Smith and Jordan Jefferson to come back

Our DL recruiting has been awful losing the top 2 Dl in our state to A&M and our coach is anyone’s guess to if he will ever be back. Maason is clearly not 100% yet and he’s out of shape plus he’s playing the nose tackle spot this year with Wingo at the 3 tech. Jefferson is a senior but he can use his COVID year if he wants and he would be the obvious starter at nose tackle with Maason moving back to the 3 tech where he should really be playing. I think it could help both guys but I’m not counting on keeping either. NIL does help though since we can give a guy like Jefferson a nice deal to come back when he’s probably a mid-late round guy right now he might make just as much if he stayed. Obviously if Maason gives an indication he’d be open to coming back I think that deal would get done in a hurry.

The way trucks are careening around the interstate Gordon will have no problem with that.

No but there’s a real possibility you’re losing Wingo, Savion, Smith and Jefferson and we really don’t have anyone to fill that gap next year unless they find transfers which is possible. Just pointing out that it could help both those guys to come back and be starters at their correct positions. Jefferson could really improve his stock as he’s a load to block in the middle.

I’m gonna wait on worrying about Smith leaving early until I see dramatic improvement. I’m pretty sure NFL scouts are seeing what we are seeing.

Smith is the better player but Jefferson is playing better than Maason right now and I really think his snaps need to Defoe t that. I think we will just have to let Maason play his way back into game shape.

I've been thinking about this since NIL/Transfer Portal got big .... if you're a new/semi-new coach to a team. Do you continue to recruit high school's just like coaches did it before the portal?

Or ... do you save all that time and effort, and just go to the portal for all your talent now?

I'd LIKE LSU to recruit all over Louisiana just like they always did, but maybe it's not worth it anymore?

I'm sure it's a mix of the two strategies, but .... maybe recruiting is not as important as it used to be?

Jefferson is in his final year of eligibility unless he sits the rest of this season and takes a redshirt.

2019 Freshman 11 games played
2020 Covid year 6 games played
2021 Sophmore 13 games played
2022 Junior 13 games played
2023 Senior 4 games played so far. If he plays against Ole Miss, he will exhaust his eligibility at the end of the season.

What makes you say that? Smith has a limited body of work at the college level and none of it has been outstanding.

Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that high recruiting is becoming less relevant. However, many on this board are still living in the pre NIL/old portal days.

Maason smith would be dumb to leave after this year unless he starts dominating

Way too soon to think about next season but if you take a peek at the roster and see who has the option of returning...ridiculous potential.

According to a recent interview with the USA TODAY Network, Brian Kelly shed light on his timeline for LSU to seriously contend for a national championship. While expectations are high after the Tigers’ remarkable debut in the SEC West under Kelly’s leadership, he identified Year 3 as the season when his team should be ready to make a strong championship push. That year is none other than 2024. Nevertheless, the buzz around Kelly’s second season remains significant, considering the Tigers’ impressive performance and their triumph in the SEC West.

Well if they were to read this……my guess is they’ll all leave. Although, minus salary analysis, coach BK said earlier this week Smith will get some looks at 3 or 5 technique. But most importantly, Smith has been doing what the have asked him and he is getting better at it.

Why would I recruit high school kids who I know nothing about at the college level, when I can just NIL a program a starter from another program? I'll have full game tape on that kid, I'll know strengths, I'll know weaknesses, I can ask teammates or coaches what's he like in practices, I can see if he's successful managing a football program and college classes.

I've said it for a while now. Some of these lesse programs that will never sniff a championship due to NIL, need to do whatever is possible to become a "funded training college." Have the big school help out the small school with donors to attract high schoolers with NIL money. Small school runs the same offense or defense. Allows you to grab a kid from the program right down the road when they have the potential. Just like Jucos were a few years ago.

JUCOs were talent parking lots when kids had things go wrong and they needed to reset.

You aren’t going to get a 4 or 5 star kid to go to a minor league, feeder school on the hope he gets the LSU call up when he can just go play at a competitive P-5 program instead.

Swap the name and this sounds just like Danielle Hunter threads of yonder past.

He was clearly sandbagging to get to the league uninjured, and it worked.

Not throwing those barbs at smith, he just came off a huge injury, but the conversation around staying/going is the same.
