Mekhi Wingo - Quietest All-American?

I feel like Mekhi Wingo has got to be the most under-talked about returning All-American I've seen at LSU. Perhaps its cuz he was a three star in high school, transferred after one year at Missouri, and then wasn't even slated to start until Maason Smith went down for the season in the first game. Or because he went in to have a statistically quieter year, finishing with just 3 sacks (less than saivion Jones) and 8th on the team in tackles, including behind fellow lineman Jaquelin Roy. While I think fans generally agreed he was a good player, I think even some LSU fans were shocked to see him make the third team All American squad by seasons end, the only LSU player to make the AP All-American roster.
Now, he is a second team preseason All American going into the season. But when we talk about best players on the team, we'll likely bring up Will Campbell or Jayden Daniels or Maason Smith before we do Wingo. All of them are great players and worthy of discussion for being counted as among the best on our team, but none enter the season as a preseason All American like Wingo. Why do you think Wingo gets so overlooked, even by LSU fans? What kind of impact do you expect him to make this year? In your mind, do you see as just a really solid player or undoubtedly All American status?

Most definitely the most quietest All American on this team. I think he’s going to have an even bigger year now that Masson will be eating up blocks.

So Maason Smith is just eating up blocks these days?

If wingo and Maason Smith are both legit all American candidates, our dline is gonna WRECK. But I feel like Smith gets more hype on this board even when Mingo is a proven All American

Smith has the tangibles and intangibles to be one of the best Dlineman that LSU has had since michael brockers.
Have we seen this yet? No because he was a freshman and then he got hurt. But it's there.

Very under appreciated. The secondary is a concern on paper and obvious. LSU front 7 also has a chance to be so dominant that an okay back four can do great and excel.
Dime packages against elite spread teams could cause a problem but I’m not sure that we will be facing one of those. Kiffin and Ole Miss will try but they don’t have the extreme talent necessarily.
Bama is going to run the ball more. Auburn is new system with a toss up qb.
Florida State is going to have the best QB LSU faces all year.

Wingo was so underrated last year. he basically saved our DL after Smith went down.
he was the second best defender
on our team after Perkins he he played more.

Wingo reminds me of Aaron Donald lite. Underside but quick off the ball and strong as shite.

If you actually watch him play you wouldn’t be that surprised he was an all American but that’s just me

Yeah I feel like I'd have to go back and watch some games with an eye on him. Feels like he probably created more pressure than his stats indicate

Talk about a lunch pail guy who brings it every quarter of every game. It will be exciting to watch him work with M. Smith next to him and guys like Speights & Perkins behind him.

He has the tangibles. We have no idea if he has the intangibles. That is what we are about to find out.

He is a solid player and also severly underrated. But he does not have the talent of guys like Maason Smith, Harold Perkins, Saivion Jones, Will Campbell, or Emory Jones. But that doesn't mean he doesn't deserve recognition because again he is a very good player and honestly is going to have a better season if Maason Smith, Saivion Jones, and Harold Perkins can stay healthy.

Hell, one of our resident fantasy league coaches on The Rant doesnt even have him starting on his depth chart… LOL

Call me an outlier, but to get named as an AA is a very loud thing. It means he's noticed lol. OUR FAN BASE may underappreciate him, but surely not any of the die hard, in the know fans here on TD. He's our 2nd best player on defense...not debatable. Last year he was our most consistent player on the team...not debatable. Hoping he continues on his first two years, and has a DAMN Good Junior season!

LOVE Wingo. He seemed to be in on just about every tackle last year. So glad he came here. Him and Roy were a two man wrecking crew last year.
