It’s not out of line for a coach to ask the umpire to check the hat of a pitcher with a black blob on the bill of the hat. Riser asked the ump to check the hat, the ump didn’t find anything in the way of an illegal substance, and every was ready to move on. Except for Russell Reynolds, he lost his composure and didn’t record another out and had to be pulled.

He didn't "have to be pulled"
Reynolds got the first two outs, Riser got the ump to check, Reynolds walked one batter, and Mainieri pulled him.

Why do y’all act like pitchers don’t know how to use a foreign substance? It routinely happens in professional baseball. You think a college pitcher couldn’t learn from a former team mate, or a pitching coach who spent 20 years in professional baseball?
Paul Mainieri should have asked the umps to check the pitcher from Gonzaga for a foreign substance.
