The Polian Predicament

Polian clearly to take the blame on kick off/punt coverage. I don't see how we continually allow our coverage to give up returns well past the 25 yard line. Is purely because we don't have the horses to run a half decent kick off unit?
Last I checked, we have ~64 scholarships used, well below the 80-something allowed by the NCAA. No reason to put our starting offensive/defensive players on the field and risk injury.
Bech letting the ball clearly hit him in the face on what could've been a returnable punt. That's not on Polian, but "fans" are calling for his firing after this play.
Polian has been coaching special teams in some capacity for over 20 years. I can't imagine firing him over what clearly looks like a personnel issue, but certainly dug his own grave this season.

Dont fire him, keep him as recruiting coordinator.

You do realize he has to coach something in order to still be the recruiting coordinator? Recruiting coordinator in and of itself is not a position on the coaching staff.

He should stay on for recruiting, but needs to be relieved of coaching special teams. LSU should be 6-1.

There’s so many mistakes happening other than guys not catching the ball. Not knowing when to fair catch it or let it bounce. Penalties on nearly every special teams play. Illegal motions, block in the back, etc. blocking scheme , everything. It’s terrible

Give him an experienced retired special teams coach as his personal analyst on the shadow staff. And do it tomorrow.

I'll admit that our special teams need to be better....but dammit.....you can't blame a coach when our guys keep dropping the ball !!!

So put "assistant coach" in his title and go get a real special teams coach to run things. It's not hard. If he doesn't like it, there's the door.

We also had a penalty and allowed a 50 yard return on opening kick.

I think we bring on someone in the analyst role to help him with the actual coaching and that will allow him to be more of a recruiting guy.

It’s year one. The LSU staff had to install everything, and they didn’t have enough time to install everything. What would you let slip in this situation? Offense? Defense? Or special teams?
It should get better as the year goes on, and it should be fixed next season. I’m not judging Polian based on a year in which Kelly probably did not allot enough practice time for him to make the special team units solid.
Remember, if we had a full allotment of scholarship players Kelly probably could have given Polian some studs - like Perkins - and let him coach them on special teams. Instead Perkins has been drinking defensive packages from a fire hose.

That doesn’t change anything. The point is that there is a limit to the number of coaches allowed in on field/recruiting roles. A coach has to be assigned to one of the on field slots to recruit off campus. If LSU were to hire a new on field special teams coordinator, one of the on field coaches would have to be let go.

My issue with Polian is him screaming directions at guys while the ball is in the air the last two weeks. Besides the fumbles (which are not his fault), we don't seem well prepared on how we're even lining up when kicks are coming. And we also had a formation penalty after a very nice punt last night, so we had to punt over. Fortunately, the punter booted two nice ones in a row.

Way off. Kelly said we’re at 76.

Yeah, but when you don’t have enough scholarship players you give away scholarships to players who otherwise would not get them.

Main thing I have noticed is they don't cover and head down field with their hair on fire. They cover punts and kicks like they are trying NOT to make a mistake. This is coaching.

Our previous three coaches placed some of our best athletes on special teams. Heck, it’s part of the reason we’ve had so many UFA make it in the NFL; they were willing and able play special teams

I agree but the blocking is horrendous. It’s a lot easier to catch the ball if you don’t have 3 guys barreling down full speed practically untouched and 2 feet from you when you’re trying to catch it.

This is a BS excuse that people run with because they want to say we don’t have enough talent. We have plenty enough talent to be able to field a decent special teams unit and if you think otherwise that’s foolish.

Special teams problems are mostly because of lack of depth. Without depth, you have to put guys on the field who aren’t ready, or guys that are already playing other positions and have to split their attention/practice time/etc
You will notice the years LSU had great special teams, we also had great depth. I recall Jarvis Landry covering kickoffs early in his career.
