From today's SEC Coaches Teleconference:
quote:

“I think it was very close,” Kelly said. “Jayden’s experience maybe edged out Garrett at the end in terms of his poise. Garrett is a guy that has a lot of skills but maybe a little less experience, but that wasn’t his fault. … At times that showed. … You could see the poise and confidence that 3 years of starting gives you. Maybe that was the edge he had.”
quote:

Brian Kelly said he recruited Jayden Daniels at Notre Dame. "When he was looking to transfer we built a relationship through the transfer portal."

He also said this about RB John Emery: "He's a big back and has more speed. He hasn't played in a year, so he can't play the whole game. But he will compliment our RB group. He has everything you want, but we're not going to ask him to do too much."

I have a feeling Emery is going to break a long one and then the "he can't play because he's missed time" notion will be out the window.

I think coach is trying to say “Leonard Fournette isn’t walking through that door” without saying it.

Basically, Emery is a really good back but don’t expect us to just hand it off to him 30 times this weekend

Chicken, Daniels is far better of a QB than nearly everyone here gave him credit for. We often misjudge LSU QB’s but not Kelly. The experience was evident, and Daniels improved much in his accuracy. LSU is in great shape at QB, baw.

I don't expect 30 carries, but 12-15 wouldn't be unheard of.
I think the running game is going to be vital in the game vs msu when you have to control the time of possession to keep the cowbells off the field.

No CBK meant to say it just like that, which he did.

It’s now or never for Emery. No more excuses.

Big difference between having one big play and playing the whole game when not "game" conditioned.

John Emery has to have the freshest legs of all of the team at this point

much more important to control scoring points. I don't give a hoot about controlling the clock. I want to gain as many yards in as big chunks as possible, and score as much as possible.

Sure, I'd love to grind out 12 play drives all the time, but that's unlikely against good opponents. Just try to move the damn ball as much as we can. If we have long sustained drives - that's great. But that can't be the goal going into the game. The goal is to move the ball and score as much as we can - controlling the clock is secondary.

The "grind it out" mentality to shorten the game is straight out of the Les Miles playbook.

John Emery is the best RB on the team right now without a doubt because Goodwin and Cain are trying to find themselves right now. They are hard running RBs I'll give'em that, but not as talented as past LSU Rbs. Emery should not only have fresh legs, but he should bust out this season because he's the most experienced RB and knows what SEC play is all about. Giving him 15 carries shouldn't be a problem at all.

I still laugh when I think of the vitriol most on this board had when it leaked Daniels was leading the QB competition. It was probably 3-1 against it based on the votes.

We are going to have to out offense MSU. Can we do it? The last time I saw MSU our DBs were like the drunk walking into the field last Saturday. I hope we've improved or this won't even be close to being pretty.
