1. UT is one of the best public schools in the nation and to pretend otherwise is silly. It IS a better school than LSU (and I'm a proud alumni of LSU). It would be far better than the rest of our conference. Only Vandy and Florida could argue. Does that mean every UT grad is superior. Of course not. I live in Texas and have a lot of UT grads who take orders from me. Every large school has a sizeable population of knuckleheads and UT is no different. Indeed, I would speculate that the knuckleheads are disproportionately represented on UT message boards, which is where the elitism and inability to have an honest discussion stems from. But all this being said, arguing that UT isn't all that great a school is a losing argument anywhere but the echo chamber of an LSU (or OU or aTm) message board.

2. We chant SEC because the fans of each school realize that a lot of the respect our champion is afforded is due to the quality of our peers. What is seen as arrogant by non-SEC schools is simply a respect for each other and a pride in the fact that whoever makes it as champion of our conference has truly made it through the ringer, is battle-tested and is well prepared for the gold medal game against the college football version of Finland (or was it Switzerland, I forget). The champ already beat the proverbial Russians by winning its Division and ousting a worthy foe in the SEC title game.

I thought I had more but this post is long enough.

Couldn't have said it any better on either point. Especially your sentiment on SEC pride.

The SEC will NEVER be an option for Texas. Why? The IMAGE. I'm not saying it's right, wrong, or anything else but that it IS. Vandy is a great school. There are arguments for every college and you can get a great education at SFA if you apply yourself, but the fact is that nationally the SEC is seen as a group of over-drinking, NASCAR watching, win first, study second, football is king and the library can go to Hell, redneck schools.

Texas just needs to get back in their Formula One cockpit, peel some rubber, and head west.

UT and it's jackass fans pull this whole academia card in an arena that we all know it has little significance in

It actually has a lot more to it then you think. And it's been discussed quite a bit on this board. UT fans (and apparently most on this board)don't really understand what the academia card really means but I can assure you it involves hundreds of millions of dollars.

Was at a Rice game a few years ago; different to say the least. The Owls were getting their asses kicked bad when the students started chanting "You will work for us"..."You will work for us".
Probably some truth to that.

Rice is a great school. If Texas is so concerned about distancing themselves from rednecks, why don't they just drop football, add a Chess team, and put their butts in contention?

Oh, I forgot. Rednecks can play Chess too.

I would like to see a link showing that Texas is ranked that low.

Despite the overwhelming arrogance of native Texans, it isn't really up for debate that Texas is and has been ranked in the bottom 5-10 of every metric related to quality of life as measured by state. I'm not going to look these up for you, you can find them yourself.

It just makes it funnier when Texans shite on their neighboring states as statistical analysis shows that Texas has huge issues with poverty, crime, and education just like all of their southern neighbors.

Also I would be very dubious about boasts made by Texans. Just because you hear "(insert Texas-related bullshite here) is THE BEST IN THE COUNTRY" doesn't mean it is.

It usually isn't.

You're right on most of your points. But I think you're confused about one thing... The debate is revolving around the University of Texas. Not the State. We all know that Texas is hella shitty.

Oh I know. I was just responding to a tangential argument someone was making about Houston having the best high schools in the nation or some other ridiculous bullshite.

...because any debate about UT invariably devolves into rants about Texas exceptionalism which just makes me embarrassed for all of humanity

I saw stats on OU which indicated that only 1 out of 7 football players graduated at that time.

I presume the new regs pertaining to lost scholarships will change that, but..... I dont see OU as an exemplar of academics.

Not that this had anything to do with the argument. Obviously you're just trying to further bash Texas. But it does appear to be up for debate.

There is indeed a lot of resentment toward the SEC just because we get worn out hearing the chant, etc. when we've always had decent success against the SEC - save for last year (spit).

I knew it!! I said it before. Texas is pissed because Alabama beat you. Coach Saban made your arse quit!! You don't want to compete with the big boys in the SEC.

Isn't there a NASCAR track in Dallas/FW? Some Texas fans may want to explain how that got away from SEC country....

This is a little much, there are plenty of public schools that surpas UT in many areas.

I haven't seen anyone with a brain argue that UT Austin is not a first rate intitution. All should agree that, on the whole it is a notch above LSU when it comes to academics. The point is that it is not above either Florida or Vanderbilt. Each of these schools are undooubtedly the equal of UTA i many programs. They have managed this while being members of the lowly SEC for quite some time. UT's argument that they just will not fit in is self serving and pretentious.

frick em!
