the new rumor is that some major players (outside college AD departments) stepped in to stop this. They are throwing a shite load of money at the big 12 to keep it as is.

Reason why vary from trying to stop the Pac10 from controlling 1/3 of the tvs to the colleges freaking out that the schools left out might force congress to look at the entire tax free situation.

This is the only thing that makes sense. The Big-12 TV contract is providing $30M-$40M more per year than it should (It's $165M and should be close to $130M at most).

Maybe it was T. Boone Pickens. If OU and A&M were ready to go SEC, the PAC-16 deal would be off and UT would jump to the Big-10, leaving OSU out in the cold. T. Boone would not have been happy with that.

Why is it such a shock the Big 12 is making more money?

Do you realize Texas is as football-crazy as ANY state in the SEC? More so than most of those states actually save for LA and AL probably. And Oklahoma football is a religion up there which is putting it very lightly. The DFW area alone has 6.5 million people... 2 million more than the entire state of Louisiana.

If it wasn't for all the cheating and SMU, we might still have a BCS conference all within one state. The SWC, w/out Arkansas, was indeed part of the original "Bowl Alliance." Not being arrogant here, there are just a lot of football fans here with TV sets. Just numbers.

1) because your two football mad states (texas and oklahoma) have as many people as florida and georgia
2) but none of the rest of your conference cares near the same level (La, bama, south carolina, mississippi, arky vs largely indifferent missouri, kansas, iowa)
3) you've won a lot less as a conference over the last decade

The problem is that the networks pay for big marquee games, and there will only be 2 a year in the new Big-12, OU/UT and UT/TAMU. If it isn't a big game they can get the same viewership with other programming.

SEC deal of 3 billion over 15 years between CBS and ESPN works out to 150 million a year

Where did you learn math?

3 billion over 15 years works out to 1 billion every 5 years. That breaks down to $200 million per year if your 3 billion, 15 year figure is correct.

That works out to $16.66 million per year, per school.

The Big 10 contract pays 20 - 22 million per school.

not to nit pick but it's split 13 ways instead of 12 - since the sec office takes a share.

more money is shared out from bowl contracts and stuff like JP sports if I understand correctly - so that probably explains estimates of 17-19 million shared out per school that you see mentioned

The Big-10 contract is actually $150M ($13.6M per team), but they make another $72M from the Big-10 Network. That's $222M divided amongst 11 schools for $20.2M per school.

The SEC contract is $3.1B over 15 years, which is $207M per year, and $17.2M per school per year. In addition each school can make its own PPV deal. These vary, but UF is making $10M a year, and Arky is making $7.5M per year. I doubt anyone is making less than $5M per year. So the SEC teams are really bringing in $22.2M to $27.2M, which is more than the Big-10.

The PAC-10 is making $97M per year, which is $9.7M per team.

Because the SEC has 3-4 times the marquise games in a given year. What does the Big 12 have beyond Texas/Oklahoma and Texas/A&M? Who will tune in to see games other than those?

Rumor has it that ESPN upped the ante to stop Fox Sports from getting the Pac 16 contract and thus the California and Texas markets. ESPN didn't want to see the Pac 16 formed and overbid for the Big 12 to stay together. Who knew that the Big 12 still had leverage.

On top of the $17.2M each SEC school gets, these are some of the local media deals each school gets (top 15)

1-UGA 92.8 million over 8 years for 11.6 per year--ISP sports
2-Ohio State 110 million over 10 years for 11.0 per year--IMG
3-Florida 100 million over 10 years for 10.0 per year--Sun Sports
4-Alabama 85 million over 9 years for 9.44 per year.--ISP/Learfield
5-Texas 94 million over 10 years for 9.4 per year--IMG
6-Nebraska 112.5 million over 13 years for 8.65 per year--IMG
7-Tennessee 83.4 million over 10 years for 8.34 per year--IMG
8-UConn 80 million over 10 years for 8.0 per year--IMG
9-Kentucky 80 million over 10 years for 8.0 per year--IMG
10-UNC 97.5 million over 13 years for 7.5 per year--Learfield
11-LSU 7.45 per year
12-Arkansas 7.3
13-Michigan 7.16
14-Arizona 6.7
15-Oklahoma 6.33

So Georgia gets 17.7M plus 11.6M, about 29.3M yr.; Florida gets 17.7M plus 10M, about 27.7M yr.; Alabama gets 17.7M plus 9.44M, about 27.1M yr; and so on.

A conspiracy theorist might think this was the intended consequence the whole time......Well done UT & TAMU.
