Some interesting quotes today from the chairman of the Texas Legislature Higher Education Committee that A&M usurped by rushing their meeting to Monday:

LINK

quote:

I asked Branch if the committee found that such a move wasn't in the best interest of Texas, what could the Legislature do about it? "Ultimately, these are public institutions," Branch said. "The Legislature is responsible for funding and directing the ultimate policy of our public institutions.

quote:

Branch said there are really two points of interest that are critical to the state's view of a possible move by Texas A&M to the SEC. "Part of that goes to you don't want another major conference coming undone by the action of one," Branch said. "So there's two parts to this. One, is this a good move for Texas A&M? "And, more importantly, from our vantage point would there be a negative consequence to the University of Texas or Texas Tech University and even our private schools like Baylor - what effect it could have on them?"

Gonna be hard to do when the governor of Texas is an A&M grad and was a member of their Yell Crew.

wonder what the Texas legislature has against Houston.. if Houston moved to the B12, wouldnt that be two Texas schools bettering themselves out of this situation?

It is a FACT that these lawmakers can do nothing until 2013 barring a special session being organized at the governors request. Thus these meetings are nothing more than a dog and pony show. Also, sticking your neck out over college athletics as a politician before an election cycle could be career suicide.

Beebe gave A&M all the out they needed by saying the Big12 would be fine without A&M. Adding Houston is a better scenario as the third largest university in Texas would now be a part of a BCS conference.

Yup.

A&M is basically just ripping the bandaid off. Once it's off, all the whining will subside and people will realize that everyone (plus Houston probably) is better off.

Nonetheless, it doesn't surprise me that Texas/Baylor/TexasTech are a little concerned about the future, which at this point looks a little unknown for all of them. The Big12 will likely survive for a while, but it certainly raises concerns about the future when a 3rd name team packs up and leaves.

Let me give you one other possible explanation for A&M advancing the meeting. It's been rumored that FSU may be the team that comes along with them. If FSU decides to come on board for the 2012 season, they have to give notice to all the ACC member institutions by this monday, or else they are committed until 2013. FSU may want A&M committed before they jump so quickly, so that may be an alternative motivation.

Now unless FSU is extremely good at keeping these kinds of negotiations unusually quiet, then I don't think they can make this sort of thing work in this short of time frame, but it is possible.

ESPN now saying it's done with an announcement on Monday. Mizzou, Clemson, and FSU as the other possibilities

What i find interesting, is something that nobody has really brought up. I feel that Texas AM joining the SEC has given the B1G all the ammo it needs to finally get Notre Dame to join the conference. The B1G already announced its going to more league game in the future. If Texas AM bolts i think you could see the B1G sweep in and offer Missouri, Kansas and Pittsburgh. The B1G would then expand the league schedule to 10 all but eliminating Notre Dame's non league every year schedule of Michigan, Michigan St and Purdue putting Notre Dame in a no win situation. Four 16 team super conferences are coming and ND knows it. This move by Texas AM could be the move that Jim Delaney needs to finally get Notre Dame. Does anybody else see that?

B1G

EAST:

Ohio State
Penn State
Pittsburgh
Michigan
Michigan State
Indiana
Purdue
Illinois

WEST:

Notre Dame
Nebraska
Iowa
Wisconsin
Kansas
Missouri
Minnesota
Northwestern

To me that would be a nice looking new B1G. Texas AM is the the immediate story, but in my honest opininon, the bigger story could be what that move could open up. You know Jim Delaney and the B1G are watching this very very closely!!

there is some debate about this I'm sure - but Kansas and KSU may be as hard to separate as OU and Ok State

Is it wrong that the most exciting thing for me in this whole deal is the upcoming MS paint explanation?

i dont know why exactly, but i have no desire to see Missouri in the SEC.

i love TAMU to the SEC. I would LOVE Florida St to the SEC.

There really arent any other teams that i would want

Clemson seems like a natural SEC team to me. Obviously FSU is the bigger draw

Mizzou is not a southern school at all

Only reason for Mizzou is the market it opens. It's is dumb but it is about $$$$

Props for manning up and eating your crow. It may be a bit premature, as the SEC hasn't formally announced anything, but it was, in the words of Wilford Brimley, the right thing to do.

I don't think Texas will end up in the PAC. I think it's much more likely they'll be independent, like Notre Dame. The PAC will probably take OU and oSu as a package, and may even add Texas Tech (academics are a concern, but money is talking loud these days) and possibly even Baylor.

Just my two cents. Hook Em, and Fight On!

I'm not huge on Baylor anyway, but frick Cal. Who the hell died and gave them a veto?

Damned hippies.

Personally, I'd be good with OU and oSu as a package deal. I'd love to see USC at either Norman or Stillwater. Lubbock and Waco, maybe not so much, but what the hell.

If not Baylor with the aforementioned trio, then who? Houston? Meh.

Missouri is completely underrated as a redneck state. Confederate flags all over southern Missouri when I was driving through there a decade ago.

Texas Tech is a essentially a remedial high school, if the Pac-12 cares about academics at all they will never allow TT to join
