Yup. For example, the ToP leader this season is 7-5 Arkansas and a 10-2 Boise St. is #104 in the nation.

Indeed, it remains to be seen just how well Helfrich could adjust. However, his resume suggests that, more often than not, he has prospered, if not flourished, in his performance of the task assigned. The risk is, in my view, managed by the facts and we are likely to be well rewarded for taking it.

Personally, I think that I would prefer the level-headed veteran, with a strong resume and an extensive background in the sort of offense that we would like to run; over the head cases, drunks and relative greenhorns, who populate the "list" from binder page whatever.

this year yes, but last year it was a top 10 defense in cfb. It's doable when you know how to slow it down and control the clock with the running game. See OUs last two games this year.

Seems legit

The only gripe I have with OU is that they want to run out Mike Stoops for his defense this year. I think he's a solid coordinator. He just plays teams like Tech and TCU that throw it all around the yard

it all equals out: our defense may not get time to rest, but neither does our opponent's defense.

Now if our D-line depth is terrible and is a critical issue for us then, yes, we should slow the game down. But if we have decent depth at that spot, let 'er rip on offense and don't let their defense breathe.

A 3 and out on 3 incompletions eats up no time while a 3 and out on 3 runs can eat up a few minutes. Your defense is on the sideline for the same amount of real time either way.

See this mindset is what partially cost LSU the game against Wisconsin. The defense was on the field the entire first half because the offense could not get a drive going past 2 minutes

ToP does make a huge difference. Completely disregarding it is idiotic

Saban uses a few metrics to design his team around, and TOP is a MAJOR one.

The fact we couldn't get a 1st down is what cost us. We ran 6 plays in the 1st quarter (we actually did this the first 3 games I believe which is amazing). 1st drive was 3 and out on 3 runs. 2nd drive was 3 and out on 3 throws. Either way it's inept offense which is the failure. And because we couldn't get a 1st down we couldn't hold the ball.

ToP can mean you made a difference with your offense controlling the ball but in a vacuum it means jack shite.

I can guarantee you Nick Saban disagrees. I think a majority of posters also realize if your opponent is winning the ToP by a percentage of like 70-30, your defense is fricked.

It's not about who has control. It's about how long your defense has been on the field. You want to limit that. It doesn't mean "jack shite"

That's on par with some of the best NFL teams.. Not trying to equate the two but you want that time to keep your defense fresh. Depth is also a huge key for Alabama

It's ok to allow more points if you're scoring more points, especially in important games.

The trick is to hire a coach that is smart enough to recognize the point of diminishing returns and adapt accordingly. Being locked into a system and unwilling or able to adapt is indicates a lack of intelligence.

So you think a 31-29 ToP is a huge advantage??? That's immaterial.

34 minutes last year. It's ONE of the metrics he focuses on...the combination of a few different ones is his focus. Besides, I don't think they are as good this year as years past. But even 31:50 per game is a good #.

You know who else averaged 31 minutes ToP this season? LSU.

But your fanbase ran out Brent Venables because they thought he couldn't get it done and now he's the Broyles Award winner. OU is a prime example of why up-tempo offenses kill great defenses

Their offense didn't give up nearly 60 to Texas tech

The same Texas tech who only scored 10 on Iowa state.

I understand this. However our defense is used to our shitty offense going 3 and out are they not? How much more of a difference does it make if we still don't have an offense that can consistently get first downs and not make our defense play all game anyways..? Helfrich is a VERY intelligent guy. Everyone knows how to play possession football when they need to. Not everyone knows how to go HUNH when they need to though. You don't have to sacrifice defense if you can strike a balance. Besides, I don't care what our brand of football looks like as long as we win games. Defense has been, and will be our strong suit as long as we have our DC. Scoring points and putting those guys back our there is not something I'm afraid of. We scored very fast on Ole Miss, yet our defense handled their explosive offense as well as it possibly could. We're used to the Miles, stuck in your old ways style of play. I'm open to anything that will allow our offense to perform up to their potential and capabilities.

Boom. Easier said than done but, if Helfrich knows how to gameplan around what is a great defense, then the sky is the limit.

A healthy Lowell Narcisse would be incredible in his system
