Michigan is planning to hire former Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale as its defensive coordinator, per sources. Deal still is being finalized but it is not expected to be an issue. Martindale will replace Jesse Minter, who became the Chargers defensive coordinator.

If he’s not related it’s a puzzling choice for a name

They have to be related. Right?

He is an alumnus of Defiance College, where he played on the football team. He got his nickname during his freshman year, when one of his teammates called him "Wink" after the longtime TV game show host, Wink Martindale.

The original Wink was big buddies with Elvis. He had been a Memphis DJ. Married one of Elvis’s ex-GFs.

Is this the DC that said he wasn’t going to let Burrow throw all over them, and then he ended up going for like 500 yards?

no reason why Michigan's defense shouldn't be top 10 in the country next year, if not top 5. and if this guy was the architect of the Ravens' defense from which UM's previous 2 DCs learned from (mike macdonald and jesse minter), i'm really optimistic about this year's defense

we have 7 guys on defense who might get taken in the 2025 draft (6 of them in the top 2 rounds)

Looked it up. Yep, it was the same guy. Burrow threw for a Bengals record 525 yards.

Considering he hasn’t been a college coach in 2 decades, good luck. Rude awakening about to happen dealing with a bunch of spoiled 18 yo’s vs. a group of professionals (both well paid now though…).

definitely a legit concern

however, macdonald only stayed 1 year, and Minter stayed 2 years, and the hope is that since Wink was the primary architect of the Ravens' scheme and taught Macdonald and Minter, if we can get 1 or 2 years of great production out of him, that's a win. the defense will be loaded next year, and if Wink is a good coach and can maintain continuity of the same scheme, the defense will be needed to carry the team due to all the departures on offense

neither macdonald nor minter were great recruiters, so even if wink doesn't recruit well, it's not a huge deal compared to the previous 3 years. he just needs to maintain the scheme which the players have been running for 3 years

Yeah I get what you’re saying - Wink is known as kind of a hard-arse so will be interesting to see how that plays.

It’s also one thing to know the scheme and keep continuity. It’s another to be able to get that through to the players and continue to develop them within the scheme (back to my earlier comment re: college v pros).

I don’t doubt Wink’s abilities (great coach, but had a rough go with the Giants), I’m just more in the wait and see camp at the moment.

yeah, legit concern. but i'm hoping the fact that UM's defense has largely been the same for the past 3 years will make a smoother than usual transition as opposed to if Wink were installing a brand new scheme

How old is he? Seems he was doing game shows in the 60s.

Yup I just hope we can keep them out the transfer portal.

Will, Mason & KG are sure thing 1st rounders.
