Why would O hire Mason to run a 2-gap scheme?

He made a big deal getting rid of his rival Dave Aranda and his 2-gap scheme to run a 1-gap "attacking" defense.
Mason's line-LB scheme is exactly what O tried to get away from. He runs a 2-gap, read and react type of D. I believe it has lots of zone, too.
Wouldn't this put guys like Roy and Maason Smith at risk of leaving?

really hoping for a more inspired hire than Mason personally.

Possibly but I think he's looking at the roster and seeing that guys could convert to that scheme...maybe. I think if this is the guy he's concerned guys like Webb are going to leave the team since they were recruited for a 3-4. I agree with you though, the team would lack an identity and just add to problems. It might not be O's decision either seeing as how Woodward fricked up on Pelini.
Mason hire would also guarantee Davis doesn't commit back. It still doesn't make sense when you look at how they just recruited they're 4-3 guys.

Huh?
He threw passive aggressive shade on Aranda and his D every chance he got after he left.
Leading to the absurd claim that our D was better in the 2020 offseason than at any time in 2019

It wouldn’t make sense, unless he’s just willing to just change his philosophy and run something else.

Freeman might've told LSU thanks but no thanks for all we know. We're not exactly a stable program right now so even throwing money around especially after seeing how LSU just canned a guy in 1 year doesn't mean we can get a homerun hire. At some point coaches will take notice and middle finger you. It's not like they handled Miles well either when they canned him.

i mean he CLEARLY has no problem doing this (see: offensive choices from 2017-2020), but his leash is now super short

Sorry I’m talking about Mason

oh my bad. that sounds like a disaster though. he made his name with a 2-gap scheme. hiring that guy to run a 1-gap 4-3 seems insane

Hey he saw Pelini’s pay day

Way too much is made of these comments. Coaches talk up their team and players all the time and are wrong.
News alert: Coaches exaggerate and even, gasp, lie!

I don’t see why we don’t take another shot at Odom.
Just looked at his salary...$3.05M. Damn Arky

I agree when it comes to offense he will do whatever needs to be done. Defense is a different story since that is his side of the ball. He has a style in mind of how he wants his defense to play. He put with Aranda but didn’t like the scheme.

If its Mason, O will be fired in 2 years

You have to look at the current and incoming roster changes though. Smith is a big dude there's a good possibility he could fit that scheme just fine. BJ, Webb, etc. were recruited for a 3-4. There's rumors BJ might be leaving too even though he played a lot this year. They might want that scheme on defense. It might be from player input we really don't know. You'd have 1 year recruiting to the 4-3. As long as the DC isn't an idiot and runs hybrid schemes to player strengths it shouldn't be an issue. Aranda did it his first year here because he was smart enough to do it. I have no idea if Mason is capable I just know of him from Stanford when he had good defenses there. I'm more concerned that he never really did anything against SEC teams. Stanford played some good teams every now and then but it wasn't consistent...
You have to question can Mason run a high level scheme top to bottom in the SEC. Plenty of great DCs OOC come over here and just shite the bed which is what he has done even though his talent wasn't good.

Because O is lazy and doesn’t put much thought into his hires. But I don’t blame him. The LSU AD and TAF have been there to bail him out every time he comes hat-in-hand begging for buyout money. Why work hard and put effort into building a staff when you’ve never been held accountable.

Agree, it makes no sense to start a scheme transition then walk it back after a year.

Webb is less of a concern to me than Smith and Roy being put in a 2 gap scheme.

This is starting to get like his philosophy on offenses which can be surmised as he wants to spread it out pro style with the ability to run just like he had at usc
