re: Why is the LSU job's prestige so polarizing?

Especially with Les Miles being fired, most SEC fans are just gonna shitpost the days away.

Texas, Florida, USC IMO are the top three jobs in college football. The name schools with great resources in the three most talent rich states in the country.

Michigan, ND, and OU are three of the greatest historical programs (all top five or ten) in cfb history - but all three have one or fewer college championships over the last quarter century (OU in 2000, Michigan in 1997, ND has none). All three have fundamental disadvantages that require them to seek a heavy majority of their athletes from other states or even (in the case of ND) disqualify many of the better players they might want. The co-ed population is also terrible at all three.

RE: Alabama, UGA, FSU, tOSU? I don't have a problem with anyone who argues for LSU or against with most of these. I think LSU has decent revenue advantage over all but Alabama and also dominates the state in recruiting in a way that none of the others can actually claim. I'm not claiming innate recruiting superiority over those schools, but with LA and eastern Texas I don't think any of the others can claim superior footing over LSU either.

Ask me to make a list and I might say:

1) Texas
2) Florida
3) USC
4) Alabama/tOSU/LSU/UGA
8) FSU
9) ND/OU/Michigan

But as genro argued in a separate thread on this board, I think the rankings depend on the individual coach as well. For a person with a regional or personal attachment to an institution (e.g. Harbaugh at Michigan) a "lower" ranked school may be #1.

There are expectations of winning but LSU didn't fire Miles for losing to Alabama. He was fired for losing to the Auburn, Arkansas, MSU, Ole Miss, and Wisconsin. Granted, some of those were decent teams but LSU was favored in all or almost all of those matchups and has simply under-performed for around four seasons. When your new ceiling of 10 or 11 wins used to be your floor or near your floor you've gone the wrong way as a head coach.

before 2000, lsu was easily a top 20 program, borderline top 15. not elite, but after we started putting money into the program it took off. gen Xers remember the archer - dinardo years, but not much before unless they were huge football fanatics like me. we went to the orange bowl and two sugar bowls in the 80's along with two sec championships. and that wasn't a great decade for lsu.

89-99 sucked, no doubt. had a few winning seasons and some bowls, but was pretty bad.

arnsparger left because we wouldn't pay for coaches and facility upgrades.

thank goodness for saban, he did more than just coach football here. he brought every aspect of the program up to par with the big boys.

Oklahomans think very highly of OU and very lowly of the SEC - they also think OU is a more prestigious program than Alabama so I'm not surprised at all they'd think OU is the #1 job in America

we have people in our fan base that think it is ok for a top 5 program in the nation to hire "2nd tier" guys instead of saying we can only hire a home run or we will riot. until the whole fan base is on the same page on that then everyone will be just as confused on how big of a job LSU is.

If you don't think OU's prestige has taken a nose a dive because of the Big 12 the past 5 years then I don't know what to tell you.

They're having challenges recruiting against juggernauts such as TCU, Baylor, and even Houston.
