Why are there mixed feelings on Mickey Joseph?

I see a lot of mixed feelings on whether we should keep Mickey Joseph. No school has been able to come anywhere close to producing the receivers we have under him. In my opinion he should be one of the few locks to stay on staff no matter who the next coach is. Are there any particular reasons people aren’t wanting him to stay?

He’s great at recruiting but our WRs are poorly coached when he is left to it.
Outside 2019 we drop an insane amount of passes.

I think that's because Joe Brady worked the WR unit very hard with the juggs machine and all of the other drills. Don't know why we would have gotten away from the way he coached the WR group, but seems we have.

Say what you want but the production we have gotten out of chase, Marshall, Jefferson, and boutte has to count for a lot. You can’t tell me it was purely talent that caused these players to excel. As long as he continues to get that level of production out of the receivers then he should continue to have job security.

he’s had Sullivan, Brady, and Mangus helping him.

Bc he’s a pure recruiter who needs help actually coaching the position.

some of you get way too attached to members of a failed staff. If the new coach wants all new hires, so be it.

2020 had extremely limited opportunity to train up the receiving corps. I'm not sure how the covid situation affected practice this offseason.
The other thing and I think it's really significant is Burrow threw a spectacularly catchable ball and was the undisputed starter going into 2019. Since then, we've had a QB position in flux between 4 QBs with different styles. Not just that, but Max throwing with average arm strength from the left-handed side and then switching to Finley and Nuss who throw rockets from the right-handed side is a really tough adjustment.
Those might be minor things but 10-20 dropped passes out of 500 will feel like a major increase.

He's a great recruiter but I don't think he's a good WR coach. Brady and now mangas have helped him out significantly. I mean we had to bring in Jerry Sullivan as well to consult.

There's one in the SEC West that had 4 first round picks the last 2 years including 2 Biletnikoff winners and a Heisman

And how are those guys doing in the NFL? It’s pretty clear LSU receivers are much better. The difference is Bama as a team is better so those guys get more recognition. But none of those guys are on chase or Jefferson’s level. Boutte is better than both of them too.

Yep, I've seen way too many people wanting to keep basically everyone except Blake Baker. "We have to keep Raymond, Joseph, and Faulk." Followed by "Davis and Carter need more time, I want them to stay."
It's a very weird attachment to a very underwhelming staff, with people essentially arguing that they should be kept because they haven't proven themselves to be bad yet.

This is a terrible take. Fire the coach who has produced the best receiver in each of the last two drafts. It’s not about being attached it’s about keeping good coaches.

Imagine wanting to fire the receiver coach who has produced the best receiver in each of the last two drafts and then acting like the people who want to keep him have something wrong with them.

The next coach would be crazy to let him go

I think this is a terrible take. The reason Chase and Jefferson were the best WR's in undoubtedly because of Joe Brady and the summer of 10,000 catches in 2019. Those guys were catching anything within arms reach.
Chase didn't play last year, so his development was under Joe Brady in 2019 like Jefferson. I would be willing to keep Joseph if he could get the production back out of the WR core like in 2019 and follow much of what Brady was doing with them.

In the case of Jefferson and Chase they have much better QBs, though Waddel has done much better with Tua back, however how they do in the NFL has exactly NADA to do with the college WR coach.

ETA: Wait are you arguing Bama was a better team even in 2019?

Chase looks likes a truly special talent but again that has little to do with his college WR coach.

This. He’s on staff to recruit New Orleans. That’s it.
