It's no excuse, he's just being respectful to Michigan. He doesn't want to do anything to publicly embarrass Michigan.

I feel confident Michigan offered Miles or at least expressed a very strong interest and Miles basically said Thanks, but No Thanks and I'm happy where I'm at.

However,it is no secret and we all know how much respect Miles has for Michigan, so instead of publicly "turning Michigan down" and making them look even more pathetic in their coaching search failures, Miles comes up with this "helping them with their search" story.

Makes sense to me.

Like what was stated earlier by another poster, I think it was just to smooth things over for the way everything went down

I think he wanted to smooth things out as well. I don't think Les would want to burn any bridges especially with Michigan. If the next Mchigan coach sucks I think he would like to have the opportunity to go there

That makes sense and if it is true then kudos to Miles for the twofor. He had the sense to keep his job and then made sure that Mich did not publicly suffer. I have no problem with him making suggestions on the coaching search. That is just polite class.

But I will say this: we have forgotten what a pain Saban was about this kind of thing. At the end of EVERY season he flirted with jobs. Miles has impressed me with his sincerity and integrity.

Agreed...I dont think anyone here for a minute is fooling themselves into believing that if this job opens up in the future Miles would not like to give it a shot. I believe whole heartedly he would. So does Michigan. So there is no reason not smooth out relations.

Like I said....

The only thing that makes me go "hmmmm" about all this is that, apparently, Miles was helping UMich with advice and Skip Bertman/LSU knew nothing about it until it came out in the media.

To me, the much more plausible story is that UM was definitely still pursuing Miles and called him Friday. He was not going to burn a bridge so he talked with them and said he really is staying and then the conversation turned to "providing input" to UM in their coaching search.

It's like the guy who is married, yet "helps" his old girlfriend who is having boy trouble.

Dude, you're married. Let her find someone else to help her.

For personal opinion. This was a call made by UM to see if Les was at all interested. Les said no. Then they apologized for what happened leading up to the SECCG and he said no hard feelings. They then asked him for some advice and he may or may not have thrown out a few names. Then Les wished him best of luck and they hung up the phone.

If I were given to speculation about what happened, I would guess that Miles got a call from the President of The University of Michigan, a callyou don't lightly decline, no matter who you are, and she made a pitch to try and get him back in the game. I would guess he listened politely, thanked her for the high compliment of wanting him, and expressed his feelings that in other circumstances he would be inclined to consider the opportunity quite seriously. I would speculate, however, that he made it clear that he had made a commitment to LSU that, as a man of integrity he wouldn't renege on, and that, in any event, he loves his current job, he hasn't nearly done all the things he wants to do at LSU, and that he isn't a candidate for the MIchigan position. I would guess that, finally, he offered to be of whatever assistance he could in Michigan's hunt for the best possible person to take the reins in Ann Arbor. And if he said all of that, I have no problem with any of it, nor should any other rational person.

Exactly what I was thinking...talked about the position and said, "you know your still welcome here"...he said no and then they continued the conversation...

The previous posts have this exactly correct. The yahoos in Michigan are the ones who ginned this thing up because their vanity has been hurt. Actually, Miles handled all of this just right.

He told them that they are starting to embarass themselves and that he isn't going to be able to keep coming up with these excuses.
