What's the knock on Gary Patterson?

Folks on this board often name him as their top choice for the fictional LSU head coaching vacancy.
Yet he doesn't seem to be seriously courted by any of the major programs. Most folks on this board know his credentials, but I'll regurgitate them anyway. He's coached 11 seasons at TCU (finishing nationally ranked in 8 of them) with only 1 conference loss in the past 3 seasons, and 3 overall losses during that same time.
This year, his team's offense ranked 9th nationally in yds per game, and #1 overall in yds allowed per game. The closest any other team came to matching that level of balanced dominance was Oklahoma with a #13 offense and a #8 defense. If it's easy to do with their schedule, why have no other teams with a similar schedule come close to matching it (with the exception of Boise State where another highly regarded coach doesn't get courted)?
He's still young at 50 years of ago, but has spent the last 28 years in various coaching roles. So he's got significant coaching experience.
He makes about $1.6 million a year. But he's been passed over for higher paying gigs at Tennessee last year, Vandy, Florida, and Miami this year.
If no one else is interested in courting him, what do other colleges see that LSU fans don't see?

He is content to be a big fish in a small pond. He has ZERO interest in leaving TCU especially now that he is in a BCS conference. I would welcome him to Baton Rouge tomorrow.

It is widely known that he doesn't want to go anywhere......and he means it.

You may be right, but now that he has an undefeated season, and no chance at the national championship, the right job in the right conference could make a difference, IMO.
I really think he would strongly consider LSU, if and when it was available.

After next year, he'll have a shot every year now that he'll be in a BCS conference.

I agree. I even heard him on a national radio show last year and the host asked him about this. Patterson said he would definitely listen and consider it if the right opportunity presented itself.

Why I'm not in love with Patterson.
1. He runs a 4-2-5 defense which I just don't see working in the SEC. (see the 3-3-5 in Michigan)
2. Patterson does what West Monroe does in high school football. Takes his athletes and puts them on defense. (has a history of taking running backs and making them LB/S) That works against lesser competition because it makes your defense faster. However, in the SEC our defenses and defensive players are already fast. No benefit.
3. What kind of recruiter is Gary Patterson? I have no idea.
4. He's already said he's not leaving TCU (and they have plenty of money) and TCU is going to the Big East.
I don't think he's a bad coach. I think he takes the athletes he can get out of Texas and builds his defense up better than others in his small conference.

exactly...take a look around in all the cupcake conferences and many of them have great offenses, but rarely can anyone play defense.

Personally, if Miles were to leave LSU, Gary Patterson would be my 1st choice for head coach. I love his intensity and I think his strategy of putting athletes on defense would work fine in the SEC. He always finds a spot for his best athletes and gets the most out of his talent.

He wouldn't have to do this at a school like LSU because he would be recruiting better players. As of now he gets UT, TT, A&M, OU, and OSU leftovers. Not to mention LSU/Ark recruits Tex heavily as well.

Everyone in the SEC has a nickel package... Obviously he runs that because of the spread offenses he faces. No real power running game in the MWC. He seems smart enough to switch.

The most important aspect of recruiting is finding players who fit your system and evaluating talent. He obviously excels at both of these.
I am a Les fan as long as he gets rid of Crowton but I don't think Patterson would be a bad hire at all.

The very reason the SEC has been so dominant is the fact that they make defensive athletes a priority.
Marshall Faulk was recruited as a DB at LSU, Pat White, Laron Landry, etc., etc.
We had starting QB's in high school all over the field, even kicker.
This is NOT a reason that Gary Patterson would or could not succeed in the SEC. If anything, it makes him a more attractive candidate.
If and when the job comes available, he would be my first choice.

Mediocre offensive production whenever TCU plays against teams in AQ conferences. Other than that, nothing.

He has repeatedly stated that he and his family are very happy in Ft. Worth and have no desire to leave. That's why nobody waste their time on him.
