What job is Billy Napier waiting on? Tennessee should hire him

I think he would be a perfect hire for Tennessee. They need someone to come in and take charge of that program.

He may end up being a candidate, but he seems to be very picky (which he should be).

Tennessee gets a lot of ridicule, but that's a great job.

And as LSU fans, we need Tennessee to be good. Alabama's rise under Saban has coincided with the worst period of football in probably Tennessee's history. They are Alabama's permanent East opponent, so it would be nice if that was not an auto-win.

Don’t think he wants a job that might go on probation. Don’t see that as his next move.

Tennessee is in some hard recruiting ground currently...

UGA, Clemson, NC, BAMA, Auburn, and LSU have all cherry picked the Tennessee state.

Normally they have to go into Georgia to get a lot of their talent and that’s a lot harder these days.

Tennessee is not a great job. It’s a good one but the state doesn’t produce a ton of talent and Clemson and Georgia are taking all the Carolinas/Georgia talent that they used to be able to get. The two teams you are competing with in your division are in 2 of the 4 most talent rich states in the country and your cross divisional permanent is the best program in the country.

I think it would be good for UT to after him as he's a fantastic coach but I wouldn't blame him for avoiding that cesspool of a job right now. He is in a good spot at ULL.

They used to recruit well in FL too but of course that state has a lot being raided with the success of BAMA, Clemson, UF, and UGA.

OK, so he potentially turns down South Carolina, Auburn and Tennessee. What is he waiting for? LSU? Alabama?

He's obviously doing a great job at ULL, but you can stay too long at a G5 job. Success is hard to maintain at that level.

I would rank the top SEC jobs in the following order: Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Florida, Texas A&M, Auburn, Tennessee. (You can shuffle the order around a bit, but the 7 teams are unchanged).

He will have potentially turned down 2 of the top 7 jobs in the SEC. I don't see any of the remaining 5 opening up in the near future.

God knows who those loons in Knoxville will hire as an AD.
(has Austin Thomas applied yet?)

Until then, it's best to just stay away unless you're an ambitious Div-II coach.

They have a tendency to overact and let the pendulum swing way too far. So based on that they'll probably hire some European Union custom official who was in charge of reviewing the minutiae of trade transactions between Germany and Slovenia.

If he turned down Auburn due to internal dysfunction then why the hell would he take the Tennessee job?

Well, I assume he wants to move up to the Power 5. Those jobs are limited in number. What job is he waiting for?

Tennessee and Auburn are top 7 SEC jobs. It could be 5 years before better SEC jobs open up.

Coach Napier and the Cajuns were a last second FG away from an undefeated season. He gets his 5th year senior QB for 2021, with young receivers maturing and lots of other starters returning. Each year the squad becomes more and more athletic overall, especially on defense, due to his vast improvement in recruiting over Hud and other previous Cajun coaching staffs.

I wonder if in his mind he thinks they can make a 13-0 run, then be able to command even more for any P5 offers?

It's definitely a gamble to think a 10-1 season with a Top 20 final ranking as a G5 can be improved on. It means playing 13 straight without a single slip-up.

Tennessee is actually getting a lot better in terms of talent it is producing. The problem for UT is that they aren’t getting the talent. Looking at 247 rankings for the state of Tennessee and UT only has 1 commit for the top ten players in the state. Clemson, Notre Dame, Michigan, and Ohio State all have commits in the top ten. The 2022 class is loaded with top talent with the best DT in the country and one of the best QBs.

If Napier can lock down Tennessee then he could be successful

Well I’m guessing he’s waiting for one that either didn’t try to stage a coup with a DC to take over as HC with meddling boasters or didn’t just fire their coach to get away with not paying a buyout by saying they have major recruiting violations

Not currently. Tennessee might be the worst non Vandy SEC job out there at the moment.

Napier has obviously built a great staff and is doing a great job at ULL. But at some point he will start losing coaches to other schools. He may have the money and patience to wait for just the right job, but his staff may not.

Looks like his DC is interviewing for jobs now.

I don’t think you grasp how big of a shite show Tennessee is right now.

This is less about Tennessee and more about what job would he take.

I'm a fan of his, and I'm just wondering what he's looking for.

Most top jobs in the SEC have been shite-shows until the right coach came along. LSU was a huge cluster until Saban came along.

I would consider Texas to be shite show right now.

There's very few peaceful transfers of power.

There are only 5 or so desirable jobs in the SEC, UF, Uga, UA, LSU and maybe A&M and Auburn. The rest are not really in an spot that they can recruit well enough to win enough to meet their fan’s expectations. Turning down Auburn is surprising but it would take several years of beating the crimson emperor head to head on recruits to get where the fans want that program. And that might just be unrealistic in his view. So it may be best to go outside the conference until one of those “good positions” open up.
