Ftr Fuente built Memphis, Norvell just kept them going and there was a reason he was passed up over and over.

Fuente was not patient enough and jumped at a job that is traditionally very hard to win at.

In fact should be the opposite.
.I love all the clamoring about has to be someone used to running a big time program.....so I guess only Riley is a candidate?

I’ll be honest: he coaches at ULaLa. I’m leery of bringing in a guy from a non-power 5 conference. And I don’t think Alabama would hire a guy from UAB, Georgia wouldn’t hire a guy from Georgia Southern, Florida wouldn’t hire a guy from Florida Atlantic, etc.
Now if Napier was killing it at a second tier Power 5 school, I would be cool with it. I feel it’s too big of a leap from a weak conference to an elite job. And I kind of look down on ULaLa.

Are you really going to try to equate the coaching career of Billy to that of Kirby

Just saying they are/were both risky hires...how many DCs have flamed out as head coaches? He had no more experience than Muschamp and that didnt work out great. Napier at least has Head Coaching and program building on his resume as well as being a OC. You want to hire the next Lincoln Riley type superstar, you do that by taking the chance on someone. You arent going to find that by going after someone like Franklin, we know who he is by now. He will be a good coach, we will have good seasons, he will not elevate this program to a consistent year in and out NC contender. Im all for going out and trying to pull a Riley or some other huge name..but its not likey so give me potential over solid. Thats how i feel about it, you are entitled to feel differently and both opinions are valid.

"Bagged several big name recruits"? Ahhhhh....pretty much every player from La. that chose bama were 5 star recruits. Do you honestly believe Napier was the reason they chose bama? Good Lord. Saban was the coach who made that happen. Ask the Amite area coaches who was the coach who reeled their players to bama: Nick Saban or Napier? West Monroe? Saban has practically lived up there. On the flip side: who has Napier signed from L.A / Calif.? Ga.? Ohio? Pa.? Maryland? Fla.?

Very limited HC record, in the Sunbelt conference.

I like him just fine just seems like a risk that I would think we aren’t in a position to need to take.

Napier is probably the shittiest candidate on the list, I don't know why people even bring his name up on here. If Woodward names him HC, I'm dropping my business's suite and cutting ties with the university.

There is no way that you typed that, and was serious. Riley and Dabo were already on the staff that they were hired to coach. No one had to guess how they would fit in at the elite P5 level.

And Smart had been a coordinator for 8 years under the greatest coach in history. No one had to speculate on how he would perform at the P5 level.

The local media hacks want him, so I don’t.

hiring the ULL coach? That’s our big program changer and Woodards legacy?

I think not.

How many awesome G5 coaches have recently failed miserably at the P5 level?

Truth is none of us have a clue of who the coach should be. A few years ago the whole damn board was dead set and bitching about not getting Tom Herman….along with me, yet here we are and they are all out of work.

The fans don’t know and that’s why it is a certainty that no matter who is hired, the board will have a group that bitches about it

I have nothing against him, I just can't get excited about a non-P5 coach.

He could turn out to be great but I would prefer someone that already has a track record coaching and recruiting at this level.

If he got the job I'd keep an open mind.

This is well said. The downside is too great for him to be near the top of the list. If he doesn't work out then you're the idiot that hired a Sunbelt coach to run LSU.
