Easy - bad hires post-Fulmer. It was time to move past Fulmer. He was slipping. Just a little surprising they haven't hit a home run since then. They seemed close a couple years ago.

man....you guys still just don't get it, do you? Most are angry because our AD threw a hissy fit instead of negotiating with Herman and immediately rushed to hire the guy who had no business even being up for the job. could it have been a losing battle getting into a bidding war with UT? Probably but you still take a big swing. Then if it fails, you regroup and open the process back up. O wasn't going anywhere, you did not have to rush that decision.
Ding Ding Ding.

Snow Peas just tucked his tail between his legs and ran away; didn't even give it the Ole College Try.

Hey Joe, how about trying to sell Herman on the advantages and benefits of coaching at LSU over Texas.

He did nothing.

Just ran away because he didn't want to fight UT for Herman, then refuses to even interview other coaches that may have been interested.

He should've been fired on the spot for "Negligence."

The Haslem family destroyed Rocky Top. They are a cancer. Until ties are cut or the other boosters put him in place, the VOLS will continue to float in mediocrity.

Has there ever been a more of shitshow handling of a coaching search than how Tennessee is handling this one?

The snowball started rolling when they fired Fulmer. And Fulmer was fired Bc of the crybaby fans.

B) Firing Fulmer too soon at 58
C) Losing to LSU in 2007 SEC Championship
D) Saban
E) Lane Kiffin
F) USC
G) Dooley
H) Crybaby fans
I) All the above

The Fulmer stuff is definitely questionable. His recruiting fell way off in the few years before he was fired. He also made some terrible coaching hires(looking at you Dave Clawson and your Clawfense).

None of this was helped by any of the AD's we've had since Dickey. Hamilton, Hart, and now Currie have been pretty terrible.

The lack of in state talent(which is changing now) has really hurt, and coincides with the recruiting decline that started toward the end of the Fulmer years. Fulmer used to be able to go anywhere he wanted in the country and cherry pick some of the top talent from each state. That's no longer possible, especially with the coaches that we've had since Fulmer.

All that being said, the fans were spoiled with Fulmer in the 90's and have grown up watching a program that is top ten nationally in college football wins. We/they expect that to continue, or at least show some effort that the program is still moving that direction. Thus the "cry baby fans"

Many TN fans are calling for Currie's job for this very reason. Several coaches(Taggart, Mullen, etc.) have expressed interest in the TN job. He never contacted them. He had Gruden in hand, but said no to the request of "total control" and waiting a week so that a staff could be finalized(Currie wanted to announce the day after the season ended); and when that fell apart he(and the Haslam's) tried to force the Schiano hiring through.

LSU returned to being a good team. I the 80's and 90's team from all over picked Louisiana kids out of our backyard. The state of Tennessee doesn't have the talent by itself to keep a high powered SEC school going. It has to pluck the better players from other states. By in large that stopped when LSU started getting good again and they could not cherry pick this state.

Was already in the downturn, but UTs jumping the shark so to speak was beating LSU in 2010...then we all know what happened.

Fulmer took them to 3 SEC championship games his last 8 years there, including going in 2007. His problem was not being able to win the conference, losing to a National Championship teams and an Auburn team many thought should have gotten a shot to play for one. Losing to a lower ranked LSU team in 2001 was the only bad loss of the bunch.

UT was still a good team, but the SEC was getting much better as a conference in the 2000s, especially the West. Not being able to win the conference championship game and a few mediocre seasons sealed his fate. Considering the results after he left, I still don't think Fulmer was the problem.

Besides Peyton Manning, who are some other big time Louisiana kids that UT had during their run in the 90's? I remember most of their out of state talent coming from Georgia and Florida with a few from the Carolinas and Alabama

Raynoch Thompson was one that I remember from the 90's that was pretty damn good for us.
