I'm not exactly sure you can pin point it on one single thing.
2001 SECCG started the slippery slope from an elite program to just very good. I still believe Kiffin was the right hire following Phil and no one saw the USC job opening up that quickly.
Hiring Dooley instead of riding out an interim for one season was just catastrophic in retrospect. Dooley ran the program so badly into the ground that it was going to be a massive rebuild for whoever took over. Not many coaches wanted to deal with that, which is how we wound up with Butch.
The athletic department has become nothing more than a puppet show with the Haslams controlling everything since Doug Dickey retired in 2002. That's a major part of why we are where we are now and they have missed most of the blame until just recently.
I will never blame this fan base for any of this crap. They have packed in 100k every Saturday to watch an atrocious product for a decade now. They are infallible in my eyes

one of the worst tiger losses i've experienced.
brutal, especially considering the circumstances.
I remember shitty Fulmer's smirk after the game praising Clausen.
Terrible loss.

I don't think its any of the things listed. I think it has more to do with the rise of other programs in the surrounding areas. UT used to be able to pluck kids from here and all along the SE. Saban closing the Louisiana border along with other ACC and SEC schools getting better hurt their ability to do that, with not enough in state talent to lean on.

Tennessee's instate talent has exploded in the past few years and it's not all in Memphis anymore. Nashville and the surrounding area in the midstate has become a hotbed of football talent.
Go look at 247's TN player rankings then compare to Alabama, Mississippi, and South Carolina

No you don't get it. LSU had the money they offered the money and nobody wanted the job. they took one look at what was here and what they had to work with and they ran.

2001 SEC Championship is correct answer
Posted on 11/30/17 at 11:43 am to Placebeaux
The 2001 SEC championship game was their downfall. They have never been the same since. With a Tenn win over LSU, who they already beat in the regular season, Tenn would go on to play Miami in the BCS national championship game. LSU upset Tenn in the SEC championship game and the Tenn program started to decline from that point on.

Law of averages got them. I've lived in Ark. since '83 and I think I can honestly say all teams in the SEC has seen some dismal times during that stretch.

Still not an answer but I do agree this is about Tennessee, LSU already made the best hire. Let's move on.

The correct answer is Jim Haslam

Lol at those wanting be responsible cause of the 2001 game.
The downfall was Fulmer, he could never really get that offense back like it was under Cut. That started a slide and fans wanted him ran him off and finally got their wish. The way they treated Fulmer is what landed them with Lane and they have been in this position of not being able to get a decent coach since.
Had they found a way to transition Fulmer out under better terms, they may have landed themselves a better coach than the last few.
Lane train staying may have really torpedoed them worse, he was making them head for some serious sanctions.
