Officially.

They said Mullen and Sexton have let Currie know that he is very interested in Tennessee. Also, Currie is planning on announcing Tennessee's hire next Monday.

What people think it is a home run hire. There is no such thing is a great hire until that coach did something great at the current job.

Then why isn’t Florida going after him?

According to msu fans it has to do with a mix of Stricklin, an MSU alum not wanting to piss of his big msu donor father in law, screwing over his school, and mullins wife not liking UF. Or some shite like that.

Mullen considered leading candidate for Tennessee job
quote:

Knoxville, TN 11/22/17 (WVLT) -- Our media partner Chris Low of ESPN says Dan Mullen is the leading candidate and among the front runners for UT's vacant head football coaching job.

There have been reports today that former Oregon and NFL head coach Chip Kelly was considering offers from Tennessee as well as Florida and ucla... our partners at Volquest.com don't believe the vols were serious suitors for Kelly's services...

The coach Kelly news aside, both Volquest and our media partner Chris Low of ESPN believe the clear cut front runner is Miss. State head coach Dan Mullen, "...I think he's right there at the top and why would he not be, I think the prerequisite if you're gonna hire a football coach in the SEC is to get somebody who's won in the SEC who's recruited in the SEC who understands the culture of the league and Dan's seen it from a couple different perspectives he was at Florida, part of that staff with Urban meyer that won a couple national championships and has done a tremendous job at Miss. State."

Mullen's final regular season game is tomorrow night in the annual Egg bowl against Ole Miss. A win and Miss. and the Bulldogs will complete a 9-3 regular season.

UT A-D John Currie was in the Bahamas today watching the basketball Vols defeat Purdue 78-75. He's expected back tomorrow, which certainly fits the timeline for a possible interview with Mullen on Friday or Saturday.

Some additional smoke...I hacked Dan's Amazon account and looks like he ordered one of these for every member of the family yesterday.

I think Mullen to UTk is a good hire. He’s done about as good as one can do at MSU. He’s been a HC for close to a decade now and he stays in the Conference. He may not be a home run but he’s at worst a double.

I agree. Not much of a safer hire from the consistent factor. Especially knowing what he's getting into. Problem I had with jones who had no sec knowledge other than getting beat by UT.

And to be clear my "even if he doesnt get him" comment was more on mullin not accepting it. I think Currie is wanting him, but it's hard to get on board before it's final for real (ala kelley to uf leaks.) Especially looking at all he will be leaving at msu. But he has definitely hit the ceiling at msu, and he's super young considering how much sec experience he has.

Mississippi State team could hinder Dan Mullen to Vols
quote:

Dan Mullen is a top candidate for Tennessee football head coach. But the 2018 Mississippi State Bulldogs roster may keep him from going to the Volunteers.

If you’re Dan Mullen, it makes sense to want to go to a bigger program at this point. He would seem to have maxed out what he can do with the Mississippi State Bulldogs. And with a program like Tennessee football potentially interested, you could see why Mullen would reciprocate the interest.

However, if he has any patience, he may wait a year to do it. And that could be devastating for the Tennessee football program if they go hard for him.

Right now, Mullen is in a solid position at Mississippi State. Next year, he has a chance to massively increase his value on the open market. That’s simply due to the talent the Bulldogs have coming back.

This team is already 8-3 and in the Top 25, and they’ll likely finish 9-3. But they return eight starters on offense, including four of five offensive linemen, their leading rusher in Aeris Williams, most of their leading receivers, and of course, Nick Fitzgerald at quarterback.

But it doesn’t stop there.

The Bulldogs really only lose two key players on defense, J.T. Gray and Dez Harris. However, outside of them, a ton of guys are back.

Their front seven is loaded with playmakers like Jeffery Simmons, Montez Sweat and Gerri Green coming back. And in the back seven, they just have to figure out how to replace the corners.

If that wasn’t enough, Mississippi State now has the No. 12 ranked recruiting class on Rivals. That’s third in the SEC for 2018. Yes, they’re on pace for arguably their best recruiting class ever.

Combine that with the returning talent, Mullen is set to have a historic year for Mississippi State in 2018. Remember the 2014 team? The 2018 guys should be significantly better.

You could legitimately see them not losing to anybody but the Alabama Crimson Tide on the road next year at this point. In fact, I’d pick them in every other game looking that far ahead.

And Alabama may be a winnable.

As a result, it might be best for him to not entertain the Tennessee football offer at this point. Could you imagine his marketability coming off a 11-1 season at Mississippi State? He could command a much higher price for any other job he takes.

Meanwhile, without waiting, he’d take a pay raise not as high as it could have been, and he’d have to go back to rebuilding if he joined the Tennessee football program. It’s not the best setup, and it’s why he may seriously consider returning to Starkville for at least a year.

Yeah but what major SEC program will be open next year that is a significant step up from msu like UT? Other than a huge maybe at lsu, but in the SEC bama and UT are the pinnacle programs for an SEC coach like him with no real tie somewhere.

This move isnt about getting a raise as msu has mortgaged the house to keep him at a high salary. This is about a man looking in the mirror, and telling himself he's ready for the big stage. If he brings UT to where they should be then he'll get the extensions creeping him up the pay scale in chunks.

Yep. Despite the good 2018 outlook at MSU, there's still the tough gauntlet of UA, AU, LSU & ATM. I don't think the odds of MSU winning the West in 2018 or beyond are very good.

If Mullen truly wants a gig where he'll be better able to compete for championships, the timing and fit at UT are very good. UT has a good roster, recruiting class and recruiting outlook. Shouldn't take him long to get UT highly competitiive.

And, if successful at UT, he could stay for the long haul just like he can now at MSU.

Msu is not the next level though. UT is. As long as saban is at bama, auburn stays as is, lsu being a threat he has a hard road to sustain it. If he is as good as thought he'll only be able to prove it at a UT. He's a legend at msu by just being middle of the pack.

Only thing I would throw out there in him staying at msu, barring it being a money thing which I dont think it should be, is that bama reaches out saying "we are watching you for whenever saban" leaves. That could be worth sticking around at msu to ride his team next few years.

Btw - it seems that the msu 2018 team grown to be greater and greater since the mullin to UT talk got hotter.

I just don't see how it's a good move for him this year. Big risk and rebuilding project, vs a 10 win floor next year in Starkville. If he wants to leave then his resume is that much better. Big jobs open annually so that really isn't a big factor.

The other scenario is that he actually wants to be at State for another 10 years and continue to elevate the program. Crazy I know but all programs started somewhere, it's his only chance of reaching the true Pinnacle of the profession. Lots of coaches win championships, not so many truly build programs and are forever the face of a university.

I remember Hud being the big name a few years back but he's seemed to cool off.

Honestly, you could promote from within. Hevesey has been with Mullen since they were assistants for Meyer at Bowling Green, Gonzalez has also been here for a handful of years. I think it's really hard to bring in someone from the outside and continue what Dan has started.

Only question mark there is his recruiting ability. He can be off-putting, 100% Jersey a-hole but makes mean arse offensive linemen.

State isn't in a bad spot if Mullen leaves. The deck is stacked for the next 5 years and you have some promising prospects for your next coach.

I get all you said, and why I constantly say it's not a "money" thing at all.

At this point he can rebuild UT to prominence. If he doesnt do well at UT then he can come back to msu if it's mediocre, and go the long term route. Yall would accept him back. Sometimes it helps going to get a different view, and come back to have a quicker jump to where msu can go.

As an example I had a work friend who came from a smaller "small town" company in the industry. After about 2 yrs her doing well, and training her old company threw the house at her to come back. She did, and what she learned is only going to make the smaller company better IF they can stop getting in their own "small town/company mindset" way.

As I said in a previous thread I dont know if mullin does it or not cause he will be leaving a lot of positives. I am happy to see Currie going about this one way better than hart did, so we'll see. it's a lot for Mulins to mull over though. Just hope it's this wknd or nothing, so Currie moves on to the next option.
