I believe LSU wanted Herman (after Sexton pissed off Alleva concerning the Fisher deal), but Herman was waiting on Texas. Texas had division among the shot-callers on whether they was firing Strong or not. This seems to be what the hold-up was the entire time. As a safety net, the O project sounded too good to pass up (after O interview) if Texas wound up pursuing Herman.
I liked Herman, but I really don't think he would've stuck around. I remember the meltdown after Saban left..
I'm not mad. Things happened pretty fast, and everything was riding on the Texas decision.

Herman coveted Texas more and it's a better gig. Who could blame him? Weaker conference, Texas has more prestige, money, etc.
The best chance to land Fisher was last year and King blew it.
After those two is there anyone who really excites you? Fedora? No! Gundy? Hell no! Holgerson? He's garbage. Fleck? Unproven! Fuentes? Maybe.
Orgeron would not be my first choice. I don't see him as the next Saban or Meyer but he's relatively low risk. We know he will recruit well- equal to or better than Miles. We know he is not stubborn about offensive scheme like Miles. It's an improvement over Elmer Fudd/Mush mouth.
