Titans will be able to pursue Chip Kelly, if they want to

The path for Chip Kelly to reunite with Marcus Mariota became a lot clearer on Tuesday, when the Titans fired coach Ken Whisenhunt. To put the two together again, here’s how it would work.

After the season ends for the Titans and Eagles, the Titans would be permitted to request from the Eagles permission to speak to Kelly, and to sign him to a contract. Before permission is granted, the two teams must negotiate the terms of compensation, in the event the Titans hire Kelly.

The question becomes what the Eagles would want for Kelly, and what the Titans would be willing to surrender. Much of that hinges on how committed Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie is to keeping Kelly around — and how committed the Titans would be to getting him.

Kelly’s wishes will be a major factor in this. If he wants out of Philly, Lurie likely won’t put up a major fight to keep him around. Especially if the Eagles, currently 3-4, don’t make it to the playoffs this season.

As Kelly is learning, thanks to a revolving door that has included Mike Vick, Nick Foles, Mark Sanchez, and Sam Bradford, a coach needs a great quarterback to succeed consistently at the NFL level. While the jury is still out on whether Mariota will be a great NFL quarterback, Kelly believes that Mariota will be great.

I like how the article has made it seem like Kelly is some genius artist that's been stuck with poor QBs and that's not his fault

He controls football operations in Philly. He is to blame for his own QB issues

Yeah, he might be the one guy that could dig a deeper hole for TN's roster if he maintained those powers. Otherwise it could be an interesting move.

For a guy that believes in his system as much as they say, it would be contradictory as frick to trade in the entirety of a very good eagles roster and trade it in for the Titans, just for one QB

Kelly might win a playoff game before LeBeau retires/dies.

This article is complete speculation. Not one fact/statement from any kind of source within either camp.

All the articles does is say how it would work. Who the frick cares if neither party has said anything about it?

I still think it's better than 50/50 that Mariota ends up being a multi-year starter that wins at least a handful of playoff games for someone. Not sure that's the Titans. But my guess is he'll be a solid QB one day.

Also, to add, I think he will win more playoff games than Winston will.

And in this same logic/theory, any NFL team is " free" to pursue any other NFL coach or any coach at all.

Kelly needs a QB who is a legit threat to run.

maybe not all the time.

but fricking Sam Bradford isn't the answer... neither was Foles.

Mariota could be that guy. I doubt he'd be a headliner type of player to the league under Kelly but would that really matter?

the Titans have not had a winning season since 2009.

I'd roll the dice if I were them but a lot would have to happen I guess. Philly would have to screw up pretty bad down the stretch this year... their offense has been shaky so far.

Pretty good defense though. I like their D-line.

I guess if the Eagles wasted an a good opportunity to win a weak division... and it is doable thanks to Romo's injury. Yeah, I could see the Eagles being open to letting him go or a trade?
