When Urban Meyer left for Florida, Whittingham took over Utah and led them to a Fiesta Bowl win. Whittingham proceeded to go 7-5, 8-5 and 9-4 with "Meyers" players, before going 13-0, 10-3 and 10-3 with players he recruited, coached and trained. (His record, with his players, got better.)
Whittingham was the man who got Utah in the Pac-12. Since they've gone to the Pac-12, Whittingham has gone 8-5, 5-7, 5-7, 9-4, 10-3 and they're 4-0 this season. Whittingham is 9-1 in bowl games.
Here was LSU's criteria for hiring Nick Saban and Les Miles: major conference experience; upset wins over superior talent; ability to recruit as a smaller school.
Kyle Whittingham literally checks off each and every one of those criteria. If he can access the talent LSU has available to it, he'd likely win a lot of games.
