This fanbase learned nothing about Woodward during the baseball search

The lesson to be learned was that Scott Woodward is a master at manipulating the media’s attention away from his actual target. He intentionally lets information “slip” to send media on a wild goose chase looking for confirmation of something that doesn’t exist while he quietly works behind the scenes with his chosen candidates.

In Scott we trust, baws.

Woody is also well aware at this point who can and cannot be trusted with information. Nobody's brother or cousin is getting coaching search info given out to them.

I really don’t think any of that was calculated. I think he went down a list and got his guy. Vitello was probably the work of Sexton to increase his value.

My mother is BFF’s with Woodward’s mother. He apparently doesn’t trust her either because I’ve gotten nothing

I see what you're saying but Jay Johnson wasn't the top target and didn't come in to play until at least two others were approached about becoming LSU's head baseball coach. This isn't a knock on Jay. I think he'll win a CWS here.

There was no smokescreen required

You people act Woodward is literally all knowing. He's a great AD but the baseball search is example of Woodward working down a list plus giving a courtesy interview to Bianco to satisfy a contingent of folks.

I trust Woodward to get a good coach. Thank god Alleva is gone. We can relax and ignore the rumors.

Jay Johnson was not his initial target.

He was not a big splash, homerun hire, yet. He was down the list.
I fully support Johnson and believe he’s a fresh start we needed, and he will do big things here, propelling into that “homerun” hire in the long run.

I’ve said this before Woodward isn’t not some God. LSU is not the pinnacle of coaching spots. It takes convincing. I’m positive he’s going after the Big Whale and large fish, but that doesn’t mean that’s what we end up with.
Prepare yourself for a usual LSU hire, some 3rd or 4th option, hoping they pan out, that divides the fanbase until there are positive results. Then you’ll be excited if it’s actually a big whale. But really, no one knows today. It’s a brutal waiting game, no sauces, no insiders, just us and our CCB for pure entertainment.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from mostly following recruiting the last 15 years or so here, it’s don’t get your hopes up. Except I do it every year anyway, so technically I haven’t learned anything.

Ah frick it root for that big whale and let’s see what happens.

ETA: the stale sauces dripping downvotes.

They actually did need a smokescreen since every guy under consideration was still playing in the CWS.

I don't think it's quite that premediated, but yeah, the fact that we've heard Riley's name get leaked so much means it's almost assuredly not him. He's talking, his agent leaked stuff to give him a raise, and he'll coach at Oklahoma next year. Everybody else has been pretty silent which is promising.

I don't count Jimbo smoke because he's Jimbo. Of course a guy with ties to LSU with Woodward as the AD is going to get talked about.

Wait…some people actually believe Johnson was the target all along?

Woodward had to restart the search after the KOS deal fell through. Jay might not have been the first choice, but he wasn’t far down the list.

CJJ was indeed a few spots down the list from the top. However, I'm not sure he should have been. Vitello hasn't validated anything he's done yet and Bianco, as stated, was a courtesy interview.
Jay should have been top 2 or 3 on our list.

Right, so in reality there was no lesson. If anything it just shows the HC could come from down the list. Woodward is not a magician like some here think his is.
He is absolutely better than Alleva, but we shall see what he reels in.

You’re right that’s why I mentioned I think in the long run he’ll prove his worth.

Resources and money and talent doesn’t matter if the coach isn’t legit. That’s why getting too far down the list with this hire would be sketchy. Let’s just hope he lands a proven coach with experience and a good to great resumè.
