And never underestimate the power of a $400k/year raise. A year or two of that will put his grandkids through college, pay a generation of medical bills, etc.

For all the posts I have seen about Chavis being loyal, he didn't seem that way in the days around the Notre Dame game.

He himself finally realized he is not an elite dc. He had been at Lsu for 6 years and never had a dominate defense! 2011 was more honeybadger than chavis. He is simply not that good and took the money and ran.

Yeah, yeah that's the ticket. We'll go with that excuse.

Chavis was the "mark" in a confidence scheme. He was eased out the door to make way for a better DC. All of this engineered by Miles and Alleva -- Epic Machiavellian Move !

Seems like he stopped coaching before Christmas.

Chavis is a very capable DC that has strengths and weaknesses. his defenses were probably good enough to win a natty (if the breaks went our way). the last three years have been bad because of misses recruiting wise on the DL and poor ML play. his '13 D cost us the SEC west title as we would only have lost the ole miss game due to the O (mett's 3 first half interceptions).

BUT, LSU should be able to find a DC as good or better. it takes time to do tdhis because the chief fricked us by the way he handled it. miles thought he was being honest when he said he was going to stay so miles needs to explore the market thourghly and carefully. it is very likely we will land on our feet.

chavis surprised me with his dishonestly.

He left because he was tired of Cameron assuming he was the head coach in waiting and overstepping his authority. And he's not the only one tired of it.

I don't know why folks cannot see the importance of the "Miles clause" to someone in Chavis' position.
Chief is 60+ years old and he's likely entering his last contractual term.
He AT LEAST wants to know that he can rely on three more years of job security, so he doesn't end up in two years begging for a short term gig with little bargaining power.
From his point of view (and mine) he's earned that type of security from LSU. He didn't want to leave, but was likely insulted by the AD's position on this. A&M came along and the rest is history.
Chavis' age drove this issue and LSU should have recognized that.

Losing 8 out 18 loses on the final drive is not a sign of a great dc! He is overrated!

With the job he did the last 3 years he should have had his pay cut!
