This is the truth. I thought LSU should have hired him over Ed Orgeron.

I didn’t want Mullen but I wanted him before Ed.

My list was:

Jimbo
Herman
Mullen
Orgeron

I’ve since learned not to trust my opinions on who LSU should hire.

I would argue that it’s easier to go 10-2 at Florida than it is to go 8-4 at MSU

There are a lot of people who make that argument and there’s virtually no evidence that it consistently works like that. To act like Mullen was the perfect hire on paper with 9 seasons at MSU, one 10-win season, and 4 seasons with 7 or fewer wins is a little ridiculous. He was very hyped and he’s currently the same guy he was for 9 years, just at a different program.

Florida is also grossly overrated as a program, but that’s a different discussion. They’re way more similar to Mississippi State as a program than they are to LSU, Ohio State, or Alabama

You’ve got to play LSU, Alabama, Auburn, Texas A&M Ole Miss and Arkansas at MSU. Those are the teams with equal or better talent than state.

You have to play Georgia and LSU at Florida. Those are the teams with equal or greater talent than Florida.

You’re talent level should improve at Florida, it didn’t but it should have. It’s a whole helluva lot easier to win at Florida than it is at State. That’s really not up for debate.

Yeah, I'm kinda the same. For years, I thought Coach O just needed a chance and he'd show the world how great of a coach he was. For a bref point in time, 2019 proved me correct. Then, I learned that I don't know shite about what makes a good coach.

Mullen had Mississippi State number 1 in the nation for a month.

Dak Prescott had Moo State #1 for a month, just like Sumlin had Manzel, O had Burrow, and so on. So many of these coaches were made rich bc of great QB’s. The coaches like Saban, CUM, and few others that are successful year in and year out are rare.

So can we look for Mullen to surface as an analyst at either Georgia or Alabama next season?

Mullen works at Miss State because he can’t recruit. He can do wonders with less. But the expectations at Florida DH MSST are completely different.

Goals for MSST would be bowl eligible 4 out of 5 years. New Years 6 once every decade

Mullen was pretty successful until
This year when the wheels fell off. His personality did him no favors in trying to save his job nor did the teams effort the past few weeks.

We complain about Coach O a lot, most of it warranted, but at least our team is playing hard. The coaching staff makes some stupid calls every game that negates their efforts it seems though

fricking come on there’s no way you actually believe Arkansas, A&M throughout his tenure, or Ole Miss had better talent than his Mississippi State teams. That leaves LSU, Alabama, and Auburn for State, and LSU and Georgia for Florida. Not really that significant

Then why didn’t he? You also have to recruit against Georgia, Florida State, Miami, and several other schools at Florida, and basically Ole Miss at Mississippi State. Each school has its own challenges. That’s why the transitive “8 wins at State = 11 wins at Florida” mindset doesnt work. You can debate that it’s easier to win at Florida but that doesn’t change the fact that it doesn’t work that way. Each coach has his own strengths and weaknesses and each school has its own challenges. Mullen’s weak recruiting was clearly more detrimental at a school like Florida than a school like Moo State

I can go on a tangent and debate you about this random shite all day, but my main point stands whether you agree or not.

Have you ever heard him in press conferences? It’s hard to believe he would do well in an interview. I got tired of him making excuses about why they lost and I hate UF.

That’s a fair point but a lot of people thought the Florida brand could help him out and a lot of those same people are the ones saying LSU recruits itself.

No school recruits itself in the crowded and competitive SEC.

Some of the coaching arguments, like these defenses of Mullen, feel like women thinking their men could be perfect if they could just change them a little bit. We all know how well that works out.

Coaches usually are what they are. You had better be good with that up front. If not, you will have the same problems UF inevitably had with Mullen.

Was Mullen's wife just as creepy when he coached at Mississippi State?

Your point is correct, but A LOT of people worried about Mullens ability or even willingness to recruit at the highest level.

Even so, he should have recruited at least as well as at MSU and won at least as many games. The UF schedule is no harder than MSU's.

Also if he had stayed, he'd more than likely still be employed.

You can’t say that about Dan Mullen. The man coached 9 seasons in the SEC west and won 9 games 4 times and 10 games once. He had the required experience. He had the required pedigree and worked under the right head coaches as a coordinator and it STILL didn’t work.

People overlooked the anonymous coaches talk which was widely known at the time that Mullen was an arse to work for and coaches tried to avoid him.

Those same personality issues showed themselves in press conferences. He is a great OC. Just not a guy that can manage all elements of the program without being a total jackass.

Agree. I was a huge advocate of Mullen and was extremely jealous that Florida landed him instead of LSU.

I think Mullen is a very good offensive coach but also someone who is not very likeable and probably one the reason he doesn't recruit well.

He comes across as a very smug person..
