Michigan State was 7-5 the 2 previous seasons before he got there. He went 2-5 last year and will at best go 8-4 this year. Not really an improvement. Also, his 1 year at Colorado was 5-7. So 1 season with a winning record in 3 seasons. He's an unknown as unknown can get as a head coach. Stop with this on the rise nonsense.

They have beaten absolutely no one and had to go to overtime to beat a terrible Nebraska team. Still has the toughest part of his schedule left. He's 12-12 all time as a college coach. There should be absolutely zero reason to have his name pop up in this coaching search and the last thing this program needs to do is hire a coach simply because they're a POC.

Your OP is trash

Yeah while Mark may not have left it in great shape , it’s not the same MSU Saban inherited. They put a fair amount of resources into football these days.

And his supporters are bending backwards trying to justify it. "He had to hit transfer portal so hard." Good grief. He hasn't played anyone worth a damn. Let the season play out first.

He’s the definition of failing up. The thing he seems best @ is securing his next job before his abilities or lack there of are exposed. — 17 different jobs in the last 23 years of coaching and never stayed anywhere longer than 2-3 seasons.

The wrong hire and especially one that appears on the surface as for the wrong reasons could really kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.

If I'm Scott Woodward and I'm forced into making a diversity hire by Tate, then you better believe that I will make damn sure that the TAF top brass and high dollar donors know.

This should be a huge red flag to Woodward.

The reason he is at Michigan State and not still at Colorado is because Saban told them Mel Tucker was the guy they needed to go get when they went looking for a new coach...

Saban has hired the man on three different occasions...if you are not worth a frick Saban is not going to hire you a second time...

and as far as his NFL stints, how many colleges coaches has disaster NFL stints but were solid to great in college?

The more I dig up on Mel the more I would not be disappointed if he were hired...

Michigan States Defense is 87th in the country.

16th in scoring defense I believe

And as far as recruiting goes, the guy owned the transfer portal this past year.

Look, I get it, he's not my 1st choice either. Not by a long shot.

For me, it's too much of an unknown since he doesn't have nearly enough HC experience at the power 5 level as I would like. Though as an assistant and DC, it seems nearly everyone has raved about him, with Chicago being the lone exception. Seeing him get promoted from DB to DC and occasionally AHC at like 3 different stops is pretty telling.

The fact that some of yall are 100% convinced he would be a disaster is perplexing.

How many times did Saban hire him to run his D?

For Saban defensive backs coach and assistant head coach and for Kirby Smart at Georgia he was defensive coordinator from 2016-2018…

He was defensive coordinator for Tressel at Ohio State in 2004…

but you already knew all that…

I think his record is 14-12.....there are 100 other coaches with a better record.

Has any cared to even look at who the 7 wins were or 4 of the next 5 opponents?

Anyone remember USF being ranked #2 in the BCS rankings? Who you play matters (to only some of us apparently).

Wouldn’t put much stock in the saban stuff. He vouched for Derek Dooley to Tennessee. He’s had Bobby Williams on multiple staffs. And he told skip to hire Houston nutt.

I’m not against Tucker. I want the season to play out first. 10-2 or 11-1 I could be interested. I’ve watched some of his interviews and all access stuff, it’s impressive.
