If you want to pull a top 5-10 coach from a major program you'll be paying out of the arse. That's the cfb landscape we are in now.

This contract is a bargain for a coach of this caliber IMO .

Im saying that LSU admin putting equal value to being bowl eligible and winning the fricking national championship is absurd.

I think Kelly’s people probably requested that put in there, not LSU Admin. Just a sly way to get an extra 500k every year without inflating the base salary for some reason.

Its gotta be a typo.

It's not a typo. The LSU side buy out is 90% of the first page compensation not yet paid. Putting some money in a gimme incentive is a way to lower the buyout while increasing his compensation. It's definitely weird because you could just not do 90% buyout, but it also makes the numbers nice and even. It's a 10 year 105 million with a 85.5 milion buyout.

Edit: I missed another 500k every year. It's 105 million. I'm also realizing that it's probably less about the buyout and more about making the media headline not north of 10 million a year. This is doubly obvious once I saw the longevity bonus.

It really is. A lot of programs are going to be burned hard by this 10 year deal business that seems to be all the rage, but when you're hiring a guy like Brian Kelly it makes sense to do it. I don't even mean Mel Tucker there (though his contract is also nuts). There are going to be guys like Herman or Frost demanding these kind of contracts on their first P5 gig and some sucker is going to pen it and be stuck with them for far too long.

One slightly interesting thing to note is that it appears that he'll have to pay the buyout if he decides to retire early. I'm not super familiar with coaching contract legalese, but that's how I'm reading that section anyway. It's not a big deal given the actual length of the contract, but slightly interesting for a guy to sign up for his presumed last contract and not have a "retire early" clause.

Dellenger pointed out that 500k bonus for being bowl eligible might be a typo I think it should be 50k

Mainieri’s longevity bonus was like $150k. I don’t think it’s a typo

It’s not Woodward inserting himself into the contract (as surmised above), it’s Kelly asserting that he’s coming to work for/with Scott Woodward and if for some reason that changes I have the option to walk away without penalty.

I have thought more about it since i said it was job security for Woodward at LSU. What you said is also true, it gives BK some guarantee of who he is working for. But it also gives Woodward the ability to leave LSU and take BK with him at no cost. Wonder if the Mulkey or Johnson contracts had that.

The buyout is huge. Kelly wants to earn his legacy with a title so I’m not particularly worried, but goodness, he could mail it it for 2-3 years and have $100 mil.

it’s 90% of the rest of the contract
I was hoping it would be more like 75%

My problem with buyouts is that they should be performance based just like bonuses. You lose half of your games for 2 years you shouldn't get 90% of your salary for the next 8 years. That is crazy but it's the market.

So he's entitled for 500k for a winning season...but just a measly additional 100k for getting to a NY6 bowl?

Or taken to extremes: he will get paid more for getting to 6-6 than he would getting to the title game.

Nah.
no because he's getting both. It's basically a built in salary component unless you really suck that year.

Probably better to think of it as a penalty for not going .500 from LSUs perspective
