Sure, but he is presenting an argument for why it may not be as appealing to Brohm. That is, Tennessee would potentially have to provide more incentive than they may be comfortable with now.

MSU fans tried to make the same argument for Mullen. These guys don't live to win 8 games a year, they want to compete at the highest level

Brohm would be an interesting hire.
Purdue is a shithole even by Les Miles standards.

How so? Because of 1998?
We have a solid AD and a commitment to football from the board we've never had. The BTN $$$ isn't going to dry up anytime soon and we will continue to push forward with facilities. We have had an indoor practice facility since the 80s (which needs updated...but we have one), a brand new $65 mil football complex that SEC schools would drool over and renovations to the stadium are on their way.
The only difference between the 2 schools as it stands right now are history and fan base. Not very many Purdue fans outside of the alumni base. It is a large, state school though so there is a large fan and alumni base out there...they just live nowhere close to West Lafayette. Because of ND in state though we don't get the bandwagoners and that hurts in overall popularity. So has the last 8 years of shitty football. UT fans know all about this though.
That said, with the bandwagoners how many UT alums and actual boosters were the ones filling up Currie's mailbox about Schiano and how many of the ftards that think they are too good for Brohm have ever stepped foot on campus?
The simple fact is Purdue could and would easily match any offer that UT would drag up. Brohm stands to make over $4mil from his incentives this year. Do you really think he'd hop to your shitty situation for $5mil? Only to be pushed out in 4 years because he's only say, won the east?
I'm not saying Brohm never hops from Purdue....but Tennessee sure as shite isn't the destination that makes him do it.

Honestly I feel like Tennessee fans will not be satisfied til Jon Gruden is named their HC.

Pretty solid post man and I agree with most all of your assessment. Also your Purdue fan base will be way more patient with Brohm than the Tennessee fans will be. Having said that, Tennessee is still considered a "blue blood" football program just because of their history. Imagine a Rockefeller descendant of John D Senior in 2017 that lost all his money in bad investments but that same descendant can walk right up into the country club because he's still a direct descendant of ole John D Senior. That's 2017 Tennessee football. But if I'm Brohm, I'd stay at Purdue.

I think if Brohm were the hop around kind of guy I would be worried. It doesn't seem he is that way though. We will certainly find out.
The biggest variable here will be if we'd sack up and match an offer. We could. I think we would but at the end of the day we've never had to do it before as our previous successful coach (Tiller, RIP) was a bit over the hill for other teams to want to scoop him up and let's be honest...the CFB coaching landscape was totally different 15-20 years ago as far as how long coaches stayed at places.
I think the dumb logic being used by Tenneesee fans is that they think they could pay him more. Not necessarily true.
They think they have the better program....and historically that's true but you'd be hard pressed to convince me that UT football is being taken seriously by anybody in the admin there after the events of not just the last week but the last year.

One other factor is the horrible PR Tenn just had. They have a real incentive to make a hire quickly to move on. That means they will overpay, in my view.
Will Purdue overpay to keep him?

I could see $5mil easy with a restructured buyout (making his bigger and ours less). We'd even up his assistant pay. With the GENEROUS incentives in his contract (big attendance bonuses, per win bonuses, bowl tier bonuses, recruiting ranking bonuses, rivalry game bonuses) in a 8-4 year he'd make somewhere close to $4.5m and that's just with the contract he has now.
We could afford up to $6mil i'd say but at that figure I think we'd start to take a deep look at who else is available (Sumlin is a Purdue alum/player and still has family ties to the area) and if they make more financial sense.
Take the names out of it though....does anybody sane want to walk into the situation Tennessee just created? What about their own sexual assault issues from last year? Too many red flags.
Part of the reason Brohm came to Purdue is that we had 2 pretty good QBs waiting for somebody to harness their potential. One elite 11 guy (David Blough) and another guy who was Kentucky Mr Football and broke a lot of Tim Couch's high school records so they knew he could sling it.
What's he walking into at UT? Garbage it seems....and he's not an RPO/Shotgun option kind of guy so I know the FR that UT is high on would not be a fit.

Every school around the country at a lower tier school thinks their coach is "different" and that their guy doesn't want the big expectations
Those schools are almost exclusively wrong in those scenarios.
Now I could see Brohm telling Tennessee no mostly because of how they fricked over Schiano, but I could say that for pretty much any coach. Even out that factor and Brohm is picking Tennessee 100/100

Brohm is smart and thinks long term, he is in a great situation at Purdue and will get paid. UTenn is a fricking disaster he should stay put.

But you're not answering why.
More $$$? Naw, he could get that here.
Bigger challenge? I guess...but what happens 3-4 years from now when you haven't even won the east....and your career bottoms out and 7 figure job offers disappear? I like Brohm but he's not a better coach than Mullen and Kirby seems on the rise....and UK and SC are good enough to beat you occasionally....oh yeah....and Saban's not dead yet.
It's a challenge for sure...but not one worth staking your career on for what could not even be more money.

Ask yourself this. Is Brohm more likely to win the SEC east with Florida, UGA and Bama looming on the schedule every year or is he more likely to win the BIG West where Wisconsin is the only real barrier and in some years you completely miss Michigan, OSU, MSU AND PSU on the schedule?

I would bring in Martin. It is all about recruiting and keeping the fan base happy. There is no losing by the AD by brining in a big time former player.

You flipped out about this before the Schiano stuff. Purdue is a stop over and little hope of ever escaping that, Brohm will just leave for someone else if he continues to do decent. Tennessee has the ability to get back, but they seem pretty damn confident that they want to remain in the shitter.

Is he? What about Chip Kelly? He chose a "lesser" school. Maybe JB waits until a job like Notre Dame pops up.

There are very few programs that could offer things we don't have as far as money, facilities, etc...
Tennessee is not one of those programs. It's sure as shite not 1998....it's not even 2008 anymore. Tennessee is nothing better than a has been now....and a has been with a totally inept AD and boosters that are clearly running the show.
I've never said Brohm wouldn't leave....but pretending that the list is 50 programs long that he'd go to is silly.

Does this sound familiar?

quote: Why would he not? State has way better facilities and he has Mississippi to himself in recruiting for the foreseeable future? And the best team he's ever fielded coming back next year with continually improving incoming talent? He's making 5 mil a year and about to get a raise. And as hot as his name is now, it's going to be that much hotter after next season. Honestly, there are a lot of reasons for him to stay and very few for him to leave.

advantage to Brohm
Actually, if information given on "Off The Bench" this morning is true, then it is probably advantage Martin to be named coach.
Culotta stated this morning that Sexton has a large say in TN coaching hires. The last 4 coaches (back to Fulmer) have all been Sexton represented coaches. This could be coincidence since he reps so many. However, Sexton's family apparently has a sky box at Neyland dating back to Sexton's father being very involved with boosters and the program. Therefore, TN is not just another program for Sexton to swindle, it is also personal for him.
Add to that, that Tee Martin is a former Vols QB, and it is likely advantage to him.
