Assuming it isn't Urban Meyer...haha. Unless forced out earlier, I have been told that Mack will step down after the 2013 season. Personally, I think Mack is in trouble if he finishes this season 6-6, and has another mediocre season next year.

Mack was a pretty good hire at the time for UT. He built a winner at North Carolina, leading them to three 10-win seasons, which was unheard of back then at UNC.

Who have you heard to be the next person in charge at UT? Would they take a gamble on Applewhite? There doesn't appear to be a slam dunk hire right now.

Skillet, I don't think Texas takes a chance on an assistant with no head coaching experience.

Besides, I think Smart might hold out for the UGA job...if Richt ever leaves.

I was just talking about this an hour ago with an alum that now works in the AD

he thought that there really weren't any frontrunners right now, and not to expect to hear much chatter till next season. Apparently, it's not a topic of conversation around the campfire. He did say that there is virtually no chance that any of the current Asst Coaches would even be considered no matter how good they do.

Aside from Meyer, the other rumor I've heard is that Petersen from Boise would be high on the replacement list. I don't see any current assistants on the team getting a shot when looking at the possible 2-3 yr timeframe of this decision.

If we don't find some consistent QB play and are looking at another sub par year in 2012, we may find out a little sooner than expected.

Petersen seems like the logical guy of current HCs.

What about Gary Patterson? He is currently in Texas and knows recruiting there? Like I mentioned before, If Urban doesn't take the Ohio Stat job, I would live to Patterson come up here.

So, I guess the short list would be:

Meyer
Patterson
Peterson
Briles
Sumlin

I doubt if anyone on that list is really a viable candidate

maybe not, but you don't think they target any of those five? If not, who are the hot coaching candidates that could get the job?

If Mack doesn't step down until 2013, it is probably someone not on the radar right now. It will be the current hot name like Urban Meyer was circa 2004.

I think everyone on the list except Meyer (since he is likely OSU bound, and an Ohio guy) makes up the list of realistic candidates.

Speaking of Bama, what are the odds they take a page out of their playbook and get Carrol back into the college game out of the NFL? Would the NCAA issues he was a part of at USC be too much baggage, even in Austin?

For those that haven't been, Austin is as "West Coast" as it gets in Texas, and a guy like Carrol would fit right in.

Cash, based on the successful hiring on Mack Brown, I am not sure if Texas makes a flavor of the month hire. I would imagine that it would be a proven head coach with a long track record of success, particularly at a BCS school.

Briles seems to be the type of hire they would get, but he is well paid at Baylor, and his stock will most likely fall after Robert Griffin graduates.

I can't see Patterson leaving his comfy gig at TCU.

Meyer is probably Ohio State bound...

Peterson seems like a real possibility...but he may be a West Coast guy who prefers to stay where he is...he is paid well and could get paid more if Boise St goes to the Big East.
