So what have the advantages been to a mid-season firing? I don't see any real benefit.

Maybe I am missing something but everything so far could have been done in the background by Woodard and Co. The only thing I see is it relieved pressure from coaching staff and administrators. Maybe made O semi sane somehow.

There was a time when LSU would contact a search firm but those days are gone and the CFB world is smaller.

I know there is an early signing period but not announcing a new coach anyway until post A&M at the earliest. So they get what...12 days anyway to recruit? My understanding is this class won't be elite anyway outside a few key players.

I'm not saying its a bad thing but...what exactly has been the point besides commencing an already closed search process.

Exactly.

I guess it gives you an earlier idea to get interest, but usually you still have to wait.

It's why I don't get why people want to rush it. Usually you fire after the season is over anyways. One recruiting class be damned, I would still rather get the best hire. Most recruits seem solid anyways.

I don't follow recruiting very close but logic would tell me if they still committed they'd sign regardless of the coach. I don't think many were persuaded by "playing for Orgeron".

It relieves pressure from within the program. We’re 4-6 and if there was no official word given up to this point, the fan base would be absolutely rabid in the uncertainty of the situation. The general public has accepted the situation for what it is bc there is a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. If no announcement had been made about Ed’s future, a large portion would still be worried about him sticking around and his name would be constantly recycled through a meat grinder week after week. From a hiring standpoint, an early firing of the old guy doesn’t accomplish much. But generally speaking, it has allowed people to begin moving on and looking to what the future holds. I think the Title IX stuff played a part too. LSU had to protect itself here and who knows what would have come out of Ed’s mouth as the pressure built up all season long.

This doesn’t help the team any. And may not even help the search. But I can give some credence to the fact that it made it known publicly the job is open. Start getting your resumes ready and send them in. But some of that could be done behind the scenes as well.

So from a personal perspective the only benefit was self relief knowing he’s gone and not the daily/hourly speculation in here that he MAY BE fired. Or if he beats bama does he keep his job etc. again, none of which necessarily helps the team or season other than maybe coaching loose.

This may have been Woodward’s first bad decision. Hopefully it will be the last.

I don’t buy that SW “had his guy” before firing O. The biggest advantage to me is that all of those candidates out there get the chance to really consider what could be at LSU. The more you get away from the emotion of the moment, the more attractive the LSU job is. Besides, have we not had 4 weeks of buzz around coaching at LSU? This is a complicated process and I think SW is playing it exactly right. We’ll see, I guess.

1. I don’t think you fire for strategic advantage. You fire because a situation is deemed untenable

2. What must be done eventually SHOULD be done immediately.

There is no DISADVANTAGE to firing “early “. So, do it once the decision is made. Aleva was indecisive and suddenly got caught with an emotional situation and hesitated into the following year.

O was gone no matter what, but the team had just beat Florida. They didn't want to take a chance that the team went on a run and the bad optics of having to fire him on a hot streak.

Speaking just for myself, I don’t get so mad about the losses because I know there’s going to be a change

I'd say it gives you a leg-up on finding a replacement, but we're seeing LSU is now apparently going to the bench, and perhaps beyond, to find O's successor.

I believe the thinking was that there was nobody on staff who could’ve realistically taken over mid season. And I think Woody was naively (if a bit over optimistically) expecting O to show a little bit of professionalism in finishing out.

It’s amazing to me that people are so dumb that this actually needs to be explained to them.

what exactly has been the point

1. This team was recruited by CEO. The kids want to finish this with him.
2. CEOs best talent is recruiting. Let him.
3. Won the NC. Deserves a fair well tour.
