There has to be some reassurance that it's proceeding according to plan or you lose the fan base anyway. The longer this drags out with absolutely no word, the more the level of uneasiness grows.

Lets see who the hire is before we come to the conclusion
that firing O when he did didn`t make a difference. If
it`s Napier I say you are right .Hire LR,NS,JF,MR, and I
think this allowed SW to hone in on one coach and get his
man.JMO.

So every interested current head coach can have his agent contact LSU and say my client is interested or would take the job. Then contract parameters are worked out.

Right if it`s a big time coach there are alot of details
that need to be worked out and you can do that in a month.

LSU could have theoretically won the SEC when O was fired. Hell, we gave Bama their second biggest scare of the season, so we weren't even as far away from that as our 4-6 record would imply. The optics of firing him if we went on to recover the season would have been horrendous. The interim contract he signed was a masterful showcase of CYA lawyering as well. O is and will continue to be an LSU employee who can use LSU lawyers as needed in case Title IX stuff blows up.

There's also not really any con to firing him early. A lame duck that everybody knows is a lame duck isn't appreciably different from a fired coach.

This is really the reason.

I think most here forget (or didn't know) that coaches will actually reach out to their agents and have THEM reach out to LSU to throw their name in the hat. The more attractive and blueblood jobs like LSU get coaches coming TO them, and the AD can sit back and see who reaches out.

Not saying Woodward isn't making calls and gauging interest himself, but opening the job early lets all the coaches that WANT the job get a chance to put their name in contention.

You fire your coach at the end of the season, a coach might be less likely to contact LSU because they just had a great season where they are now. You want them thinking about the LSU opening when they still have some doubt about the outcome of their own season.

Plus firing after the last game basically means you have to hurry and will get bum-rushed all at once. That clamps down on your timing and ability to negotiate for a long period of time.

Take Riley for example. He may not have been interested before this weekend because his team had a shot at the playoffs. He may also not be interested at the end of the season if they finish strong and OU is happy with him.

By having that opening available right now, after they lost this weekend and his fanbase is displeased with him, you have an opportunity to make him listen that you didn't have before.
