So, are all the Calloway posts a set up?

I'm sure Calloway is a talented guy and I'm glad he's on the staff but is there really no one better for the position? I feel like Aranda was the last serious outside hire. Since then, everything has been lazy, including the last two OCs, the last DC and the last HC. A few of them have been terrible hires (Canada and Pelini), two were decent guys that no one else wanted in their roles (O and Ensminger).

Tell me why promoting Calloway to OC is not the next lazy hire?

Also, who is asking for this? Calloway's handlers, the AD, both?

No it's not. It is a legitimate concern. Why would promoting Calloway to OC not be a lazy hire? LSU has a recent history of lazy hires. How is he the best OC candidate out there to get us back to playoff level?

What position are you referring to? He will likely get an on field coaching position but I don't think it's going to be OC. I think they will find a new OC and based on that person's skill set Callaway will be assigned his position. I'm guessing QB coach and/or PGC as he knows Brady's offense and can provide continuity on offense while also implementing new wrinkles.

I'm comfortable with that. What I would call a lazy hire is simply naming Calloway the OC, which I've seen several recent posts calling for that. So, is that just spontaneous, ill-advised posts from the Rant, or are there several shills conditioning the fans to accept the next lazy hire?

We are likely to be spending a ton on the defensive side of the ball. Callaway absolutely deserves an on-field position. Its more likely that he just becomes the PGC or QB Coach. However, if he’s promoted to OC, then it’s because the staff trusts him to run the current system better than E and Linehan did and because he frankly costs a lot less than an outside hire. We need more help on the defensive side of the ball.

I wouldn’t put my money on Callaway becoming the OC, but it’s a possibility. And he is qualified to be a P5 OC, whether you believe it’s at LSU or not. He was headed for a move up based on his success at Samford.

Callaway was not here when Brady was here so the talk of him knowing Brady’s scheme might be untrue. What is true is that he’s very skilled at the spread/air raid and had success with it as an OC and he’s highly thought of by O and the staff with a great work ethic. He will be a power 5 coordinator and head coach one day even if it’s not this year.

I think he's just the easy name to say because it's obvious he will be coaching at lsu in some capacity next year. I mean I don't take 99% of this board seriously when they throw out a name.

I don't see them promoting him to OC unless he is agreeable to keeping the scheme, which Brady installed, and simply adding his own wrinkles to it. I don't see them promoting him and letting him just install a new system. If he becomes OC it will be to keep continuity in the current offensive scheme, imo.

Not the greatest track record there, especially on that side of the ball

Just because a coach doesn’t work out doesn’t mean it was a lazy hire.

Hiring a coach you don’t like isn’t lazy.

Pelini was a bad hire. Why was it a lazy hire?

He and Orgeron had never worked together and had no history.

Why would Calloway be a lazy hire?

Are all internal promotions lazy?

Give me the downside of hiring Calloway and I’ll give you your first upvote. Give me a reason. Any reason.

You know what is lazy? It is when you have a HC opening for months, target only two hot names and the interim HC that no one else wants, make offers to the two hot names and fold when they counter, only to hire the internal guy who would have still been there 2 months later after negotiating with other top prospects.

Another lazy hire is paying a HC of a small school 9 times what he is making to come be your DC after an equally short search and an equal level of disinterest from the rest of the football world.

Another lazy hire is simply promoting your TE coach to OC after you fire your hand-picked OC in one year.

I call those lazy hires, and I call that a pattern at LSU.

So, why would simply promoting Calloway to OC at LSU just one year removed from being possibly the best offense all-time in college football? How is that not the cheap and lazy way out?

This is an honest question. I have concerns that LSU does a poor job of diligence when making important coaching hires.

I also am trying to discern with the posts, including the responses in this thread if there is an effort to soften the fanbase into accepting a lazy hire.

So, why is that not a fair question?

The lazy of the Pelini hire was his work ethic.
Last to get to building for work and the 1st to roll out for the golf course.
If Woodward did push for this hire, you can understand why O wants people he, or someone he trusts, has coached with before.

I would agree with you if Pelini was forced on O. I just don't believe that was the case. O had the most negotiating leverage he will ever have after last year's championship. Pelini was either the guy O wanted or O deferred to someone else. I can't believe O had someone he wanted, was authorized to spend $2M+/yr and was told he had to hire Pelini.

I’m not arguing some of those hires were bad. I disagree on the lazy part.

Sometimes coaches don’t workout. Happens everywhere.

Pelini was obviously a failure and a bad hire, but I personally thought it was a good hire on the front end.

The guy knows how to coach defense. What is hard to predict or know, is that he apparently mailed it in and had a poor work ethic. That was not his past reputation.

Also, I can’t believe there are people still bitter about the Orgeron hire.

I get it. You don’t like him. Move on.

The playbook and overall system were the same this year. You just had E and Linehan doing the playcalling and game planning. The same playbook and scheme can look light years different in another set of hands.
