This is a PM a poster on ITAT received from a UM fan after CSL was announced as our OC and gives a glimpse at what his offensive philosophy is all about.
--

I am one who is pretty skeptical of most things associated with Lloyd Carr, but Lefty always struck us as the outlier ... he was not the "we will win by just letting the other team out-mistake us" type of guy.

If you want some insight on how Lefty calls a game, you can go back to our 2007 season. In 2006 we were #2 going into The Game at O$U and they were #1. Schembechler died on the eve of the game (one can argue our program has never been the same since), we lost a great battle and then got spanked by Southern Cal in the Rose. We lost a lot of D talent but brought back a muderer's row on offense in '07. Carr deliberately hands over de facto head coaching duties to his good buddy Mike DeBord, our OC (the failed former HC of CMU). Debate rages pre-season on Lefty's desire for our scheme vs DeBord's ... we had Henne back, Mallett as a true freshman, #1overall pick Long at LT, Mike Hart at RB, a pair of stud WRs, etc, etc. DeBord wants Lloydball (run-run-2 yard out), Lefty wants to attack. We open the season with the pantsings by App State and Oregon (worst home loss ever). After crushing ND's worst team in ages, we have an okay middle of the season before Henne separates his shoulder at Iowa. MIsses O$U game and they kick us in the nuts.

So... we go into the bowl game in Orlando against Urban's Gators (this is Tebow's soph year -- he wins the Heisman that year), and whole world has us as massive underdogs. Lloyd has resigned, Rodriguez has been hired ... no one knows what the staff will look like, but the assistants know this is a working audition. EVERYONE knows DeBord is gone, even Lloyd (who had kind of given up the Debord-for-HeadCoach thing after the season opening disasters). Henne is healthy. So Lloyd lets Lefty design the general offensive gameplan.

You want to know what he will do when the gloves come off and he has the weapons to attack? Go look up highlights of that game. Mike Hart lost two different fumbles to end drives inside the UF five yard line (the guy NEVER fumbled), UF marched up and down the field ... and we still lit them up for 41 and won by a TD. Without those fumbles it is a rout. And it is all because Lefty had us attack, attack, attack.

Aww, I went and found the replays for you, just because I love that day so much.

Suffice it to say, I think you will be very happy about giving Lefty a shot. He is smart, he is aggressive, he is a KILLER QB recruiter (he was a top 10 national QB himself coming out of high school, before tearing up his shoulder). I hope he does well ... and then some day comes home to Ann Arbor. :-)

I was watching that Michigan - Florida game and saw this:

That really worked out for them.

Michigan's offense was awesome in that game, by the way.

Pointing out the colossal failure that was John Brantley is not a flame. You can't simply talk about the Tom Brady GA connection and forget that he coached Brantley for 2 years as his QB coach.

The offensive scheme they had Brantley running was a fail of epic proportions.

And he seems like the perfect spread option QB too.

no it's a legit point.

Seems like Brantley was in the wrong system though. Plus he just might not have been as talented as we thought.

it would be like running Ryan Mallette in that offense. Now, Mallette was a better QB and would be more successful, however, he would still be pretty terrible in that spread/option offense.

I always thought Martinez was Tom Brady's Quarterback guru. He was the "quarterback whisperer", but who knows. Regardless, it'll be interesting to see how it shakes out. Malzahn had a tough time this year, so it'll be interesting to see how they compare.

Here is more detail of how Loeffler helped Brady i college and helped him form a foundation for his career. No doubt I think Brady would be successful due to his drive and talent. Yes Martinez is his guru that has really helped him in the pro's. None of us are saying Loeffler is the only reason Brady is a success, but he did play a significant role early on, and Brady has even said as much.

After reading this it appears a good friendship developed and both learned from each other.

quote:

He stayed and he studied and he practiced, probably harder than most. In Loeffler, he had an accomplice. Loeffler had been a quarterback at Michigan before a shoulder injury ended his career, only to begin his new focus as a coach. Together, Loeffler and Brady worked diligently to learn their respective crafts.

"We'd come off the practice field (during the 1997 season), and Tommy would go back out there and work with Scot on all different things and run through the script we had done in practice," Griese said. "He worked his tail off. They learned from each other. Scot was figuring out how he was going to coach, and Tommy was learning from Scot. They both had the love of the details and the discipline of being a quarterback."

That attention to detail was at the foundation of Brady's eventual success.

That's interesting. I'd be pretty excited... So he was like an older brother helping his younger brother. I can see that. It'll be interesting to see how he compares to Malzahn.

Yeah the more I read about him I get a little more excited. Of course the proof is in the pudding so we shall see what happens from here.

Run up the gut on 1st down, speed sweep on down, bubble screen for no gain on 3rd down....The Malzahn O in 2011.

Read that Lefty want to attack. Something we did not do last season. And he wants to build his O around our personnel and thier strengths instead of just trying to plug them into a system. And he wants to protect the D. He does not have much talent or experience with which to work. But he can make it happen. He is hungry and needs to prove himself.

I hope I'm reading your post correctly, because to say AU doesn't have much talent or experience (especially talent) on offense is way off base

How so? You think a talented team finishes in the 100s in O? We have one real WR in Blake. Have some potential in Quan Bray. Lost our starting RB. Thankfully The Matador AJ Greene is gone; but both Slade and Sullen return. IF by some miracle, they get beat out, then it will be a true freshman. And then there is the QB position; a headcase in Moseley, Frazier who cant read a D and did not complete a single foward pass, and Pike who is at least a 3 year project. The rest are just true freshmen or soph. ppl inflate due to star rankings (example Eric Mack)
