any advantage? What? Wouldn't that be more gratification to succeed at that level and win a Super Bowl at the pinnacle of the profession. No wonder he gets along with JT Curtis (beating up on 2A schools because he can outrecuit all the other high schools)

“I loved coaching the NFL players,” Nick Saban said. “Everybody thinks it’s the NFL players who are hard to get along with. I loved the NFL players and it was never a problem. It’s just the rules of parity in that league make it difficult to create any advantage for yourself. I always thought my advantage was I was willing to outwork everybody to get better. That was a hard thing. I missed college players and I missed helping guys develop personally, academically and athletically.”

I've always said this was the reason he split from the NFL. He couldn't exploit every possible competitive advantage and his bad personnel decisions were catching up with him. In the NFL you have to account for those, in college you can process them and replace them with a fresh batch of new recruits.

I always thought it was something like this. It's legit IMO.

He said that in 2007, right after he took the Alabama job.

Wasn't was this after he said that he wasn't going to be the Alabama coach?

Saban isn't the greatest coach, just the hardest working.

Why do you need an advantage? Wouldnt the best coach win if there is parity? Isnt that the whole idea behind Nascar, so that drivers and teams make difference not gimmicks to take advantage of?

So he is basically saying in a nutshell, if all things are even on teams, player wise, he can't compete...

That makes him a loser?

No one has ever said Saban wins because of superior schematics and strategy.

He wins because of recruiting the right players, positioning them and developing them better than anyone else, and correctly preparing them mentally and physically. You know, the whole "process."

He's admitted many times before that his strength is not in X's and O's but in the aforementioned "process."

Everyone knows this. That doesn't make him a loser. It does, however, make him a different style coach than say, a Holgorson, or a Leach who seem to be more focused on schematics. It also means college football would provide him a better opportunity to succeed than the NFL, which is exactly what he's saying.

He's winning a lot of championships at Alabama. That's all that matters to the people at Alabama, and the people who support it. If it makes you feel better that he's not as good as Belichick, then go ahead and feel that way.

Arguing with Rantards that are obviously still demonstrating a rejection complex over Sabans departure and subsequent hire at Alabama is like holding on to the idea that Sheila Jackson Lee is really smarter than the rest of us and we just don't get it.

They'll be bitter until they die or until Saban leaves Alabama - which actually speaks volumes for the type of person they are so why waste your time?

So you're saying he is? He pretty much admitted back then that he couldn't compete with NFL coaches because of the even playing field. That's a pretty bitch thing to say.

Maybe Saban is a shitty NFL coach.

Maybe Bear Bryant would've been, too.

I don't see the part where this is supposed to matter.

You're gonna hate him regardless.

If he had said he could've succeeded in the NFL, you would say he was a totally arrogant bullshitter.

Instead, he shows an ounce of humility, and actually fricking admits that he thrives more where he can actually re-shape the program in a short amount of time, and you call him a bitch.

ETA: So if Miles (or any other coach) has ever talked about his strengths AND his weaknesses, he's a bitch, also? Got it.
