Rumors and innuendo are PLENTY to stop a major coaching hire.

People arguing otherwise are showing their bias.
If you are prepared to make someone the highest paid employee in the entire state, in a highly-visible job involved with recruiting young men and dealing with their parents and other students on campus, then the mere appearance of impropriety is more than enough to end the courtship.
Sandusky was pretty cavalier with his pederasty and lots of people knew. He was caught in the act multiple times over several years and even brought boys on road trips.
Anyone that didn’t know, should’ve.
I would never hire anyone from that time period at Penn State.
If your career ever overlapped with Sandusky, you would be a no-hire for me.

I agree with you, but the problem here is that the Tenn administrators did not agree with you and they did indeed hire Schianno. Between a graffiti'd rock and a hard place doesn't even begin to describe the shitty situation Tenn put themselves in.

I have substantial doubts about the penalties Tennessee will have to pay.
As a state university, no contract is valid until approved by the board.
It will come out that the Memorandum of Understanding has a cancellation penalty of a percentage of the contract. I will be shocked if Tennessee pays him more than $1 million.
This $20 million number is bullshite. Currie doesn't have the authority to put the state on the hook for that much money without board approval.

All true, but optics on this are bad, very bad. I cannot remember a coaching search this inept, ever - no school has ever fricked it up this badly.

Well, yea. That goes without saying.
It should've never got to that point, but once it did, canceling it was justified.

ND and George O’Leary has to be one of the bigger frickups before now. They didn’t vet his resume then canned him when it came out he lied about lettering at New Hampshire IIRC.

Even if Currie didn't do his homework, Schiano has been vetted multiple times since his time at Penn State: Rutgers, ESPN, NFL, etc. all signed off on him since then. What more does he have to do? This is a fanbase who wanted a different hire and used second-hand, hearsay allegations to overrule an A.D.
I just wish that back in 2016 we could've proved Eaux had a prior coaching stint at Penn State.

This story was sealed and didn't come out until 2016. I personally wouldn't hire anyone tied to the program, but the news that he reportedly was a witness to it wasn't known during his prior hires.

You mean “allegedly”. McQueary never coached with Schiano and the person McQueary claims made the statement that Schiano was a witness said under oath that he never made that comment.

You serious Clark?

Very well said OP and I agree with your assessment. If you ever worked at Penn State on the same staff with Sandusky I would never want you coaching for my favorite team and I'd also hope you never coached in my conference.

So, the same guy that thought hiring Schiano was a good idea will hire the next coach also?
