The rule was put in to get the minority coaches thru the door. Before that rule was implemented it would have taken another couple decades before the good ole boy network would let a minority run a pro team. Hell Warren Moon was one of the best college quarterbacks at UW but had to spend almost a decade in Canada to get thru the door of the NFL.

I'm not going to respond to all this but you must be a youngin. Art Shell broke the HC color barrier in 1989. Nineteen Eighty-Nine. The first black GM was in 2002.
Tony Dungy was the youngest coordinator in NFL history at 28. He spent 12 years as a DC before being given a HC job. Contemporaries like Belicheck, Gruden, Cowher, Shanahan were all HCs by about 35 but were coordinators for less than 5 years. 41 was not young nor was it old for your first job. But 12 years as a top notch coordinator is almost unheard of. And the fact that he didn't even get an interview til his 12th year is just absurd.

TMC-i understand what you are saying. My point is there was no question minorities werent given the same respect as their counterparts when it came to leadership positions in the NFL. I would be willing to bet that Art Shell wouldn't have been head coach in 1989 without an owner like Al Davis. Al was just a different breed of owner. And it just wasn't the coaching position, it was a quarterback also.

yeah, I'm totally in agreement with you. Was responding to the other guy. It was embarrassing how long it took and that a guy like Dungy waited so long when his resume was as good as anyone's for years. He even had a 4-time Super Bowl winning HC lobbying for him to get a shot.
Your point on Moon is the same. What exactly was the knock that kept him from being drafted? I was an Oiler fan and honestly don't know. Dude had all the tools.

The only knock on Moon was that he REFUSED to get switched to another position. He demanded that any team that drafted him give him a shot a the quarterback position, NO one was willing to give him a chance so he went to canada and won like 5 straight Grey Cups then the NFL had this awakening that he must be pretty good. LOL

rooney rule is a joke.
produce and you will be hired. do not produce, and you will be fired. pretty easy.
for those of you that think it is the good ole boy club....do you think those owners got to their positions (in private business) by hiring their friends? no, they hired the best.
rooney rule = affirmative action = unions. a looooooooong time ago, they had their place. not any longer.

No they don't. No way in hell a organization should be forced to interview someone just because they are a minority. How about you work your arse off and build a resume and earn a interview because your good, not because your a certain race.

When that dork that now coaches bama took that dolphins job EVERYONE KNEW HE WOULD FAIL AT in 2005, the dolphins hurriedly conducted a seance to interview eddie robinson's dead arse. At hat point the rooney rule was proven to be the joke that it is. (I can't remember the black coaches name the dolphins interviewed, but i had as much a shot as he did of getting the job over the midget).

Sure, a few of the NFL owners are decendents of those who actually created the wealth. They live off trusts and work for jobs they didn't earn on merit.

i said zero of how the owners come into their $. i spoke of how they deal with it. if you simply hire your buddies, your "wealth" can decrease in a hurry.
i am not going to say this stuff does not happen, but over time, you cannot succeed doing the things that the rooney rule was designed to stop.
