It has it's purpose. I think it can be pretty pointless when a franchise already has guy in mind and has to interview someone for no real reason.

I think it must be pretty embarrassing for a candidate when he is interviewed knowing that he is not going to get the job.

If the black coaches don't find it demeaning, then why not it isn't hurting anyone.

While I think the rule it stupid, the NFL needs a system in place to give other coaches(of all races) a chance. I mean, Chan Gailey and Wade Phillips keep getting jobs. And there's probably high school coaches that are better than those two. The NFL is known to keep hiring "in house."

It's not just the nfl, and it's not just white coaches.

As long as black coaches don't mind then I don't have a problem with it.

It's not like there are thousands of different NFL jobs. There are only a few. And most owners are like 80 and chances are good at least a few of them are still racist as frick behind closed doors.

Some of y'all may be too young to remember but one reason it was instituted was the racism was rather overt even into the last 80s. It's changing and maybe it doesn't need to be there any more. But after seeing how guys like Dungy were passed over time and again, I don't really have an issue with it for a while yet.

While I won't dispute this, I don't think any "governing" type of entity should tell the owner of a private company how he should run his business including who he should interview. The rule is a farce that doesn't do anything more than placate blacks.

The NFL is an entity made up of the clubs much like the SEC is an entity made up of the schools. The rules are being put in place by themselves on themselves. It's akin to a HOA saying you can't build closer than 50 feet from the curb.

Somehow people have to make it out to be some horrible burden when the truth of the matter is, the appearance of equality to placate a rather large portion of their customers means a lot to the entire NFL after years of blatant racism. It's little different than BP making a concerted effort over the next 20 years of being environmentally friendly.

Good analogy. But as somebody who deals with HOA's and master insurance policies every day, I can tell you that a hell of a lot of those HOA's probably wouldn't purchase coverage if it wasn't required by statute. That just bang the property owners with huge assessments after the fact. At least we can agree that the rule is more of an "appearance" of equality than anything else. Because at the end of the day, you can't legislate people's thoughts or opinions.

NFL franchises are not private companies.

It wasn't all that long ago that the prevailing thought was that a black man was not smart enough to play QB in the NFL. It took guys like Doug Williams, Warren Moon, and Randal Cunningham to prove that wrong. Ditto with black HC's. I think that all they want is a chance and the Rooney Rule provides that. Nothing is guaranteed.

I think the Rooney Rule should really be in place for entry or 2nd level coaching positions. The reason you have fewer minority head coaches is because you also have fewer minority coordinators and so forth.

I don't think anyone is saying "i'm not going to hire this guy because he's black", but the decision makers do tend to hire people that most mirror their background, which statistically favors a white candidate. A Rooney Rule for those entry level jobs would give minorities the opportunity to break in and once in they will rise or fall on merit.

not quite. I definitely believe the rule has had an impact on equality. But I do understand your POV and I think we can come to some middle ground even if you disagree with my opinion on the actual impact, as there are still legitimate monetary incentives to leave it in place.

he got his first head coaching job at 40. that's pretty fricking young for an NFL head coach in the mid-90s

I never said they were. The point is that whether it is a private company or a franchise, the people that make the capital investment in that organization shouldn't have a governing entity tell them who to interview any more than they should tell them who to hire, who to fire, who to draft, who to release or who to play.

The Rooney Rule guarantees an interview. It really doesn't provide "a chance". Eventually, prospective black coaches will get NFL coaching jobs based on their abilities and changing attitudes - the same way that black QBs are now pretty much an afterthought.

31 of the NFL 32 franchises are privately held companies.
