Report: Justin Wilcox Was Offered Oregon Job and Turned It Down

Turns out Justin Wilcox didn’t get passed over for the University of Oregon head coaching job.
He turned the Ducks down.
Oregon AD Rob Mullens formally offered Wilcox the job on Friday, per multiple sources. The kid from Junction City High interviewed well and was told a marketing campaign would be shaped around his return to Oregon. The plan even included T-shirts that would be printed and distributed at his introductory news conference.
On Friday Wilcox told Oregon, “No thanks.”
quote:
The Ducks strong denial that Lanning had the job on Friday night makes more sense now. Lanning moved into the No. 1 position after Wilcox turned Oregon down. Lanning probably knew he had the job but I’m told the Ducks paused to make one final “Hail Mary” run at Wilcox early Saturday morning. The Cal coach slept on it and told Oregon he still wasn’t coming. Lanning was then announced as the hire at 2 p.m. PT by Mullens.
quote:
I reached out to Jimmy Stanton, UO’s Senior Associate Athletic Director for Communications, on Sunday for comment on the Wilcox news. It ends up a delicate dance for the Ducks. Stanton checked with Mullens and offered, “We will pass.”
Not a denial.

If true, which it sounds like it is, that’s more than a little surprising. Going to Oregon would give him a chance to hit the reset button. He’ll most certainly be on the hot seat at Cal entering next season.

Oregon should thank their lucky stars if true.

Wilcox turning that down makes no sense to me. He will never get anywhere at Berkeley, and that place is a cesspool. You can go to Oregon, with arguably the most resources and backing of any school in the country, and you stay at a place that can’t upgrade and add on to facilities because hippies won’t get out of the trees that need to be cut down to expand. Bizarro world.

Wonder if espn will ridicule Oregon or ask lanning how he can abandon his team during a playoff run
Truly a sign of all that’s wrong with college football that he’d go chasing money while the kids he’s coached and recruited are preparing for an opportunity of a lifetime
Did I do that right?

Interesting that the top two on their list..Wilcox and Lanning..were defensive guys

Unless something drastic has changed, Lanning is in Athens through the Dawgs' CFP run

Especially considering he played at Oregon

Is it really true?
He avoids being eventually fired.
He turns down an athletic budget and a ceiling that he'll never have at Cal.
He turns down the power of Nike in his corner.
He turns down athletic facilities that aren't rivaled by many schools.
Need I go on?
Is it really true? If it is, what conditions didn't he like in the negotiations?
A promise to stay so many years or pay a penalty?

Then the narrative needs to be how can he be off interviewing for a job when his team is preparing and how can he possibly give his all to these kids
What a terrible thing he’s done to those kids

I cannot imagine turning down the head coaching job in the town where I grew up at the school I played for.

Justin said no because of the terms.

1. it's finals week
2. If the Dawgs suffer in the CFP, Lanning's personal brand suffers
3. At the end of the day, it's Kirby's defense, just like it was always Saban's defense at Bama
4. Boom and Schumann are already named co-DCs

It was George Wrighster and he said it in Twitter spaces. They had Joey Harrington, Geoff Schwartz and Dino Philyaw in there. Do you need a journalist to break it?

Cannot believe this is true.
The guy is about to be on a very hot seat at cal.
Turning down his Alma Mater which is in his hometown and is also an infinitely better job is certifiably insane
What terms could he possibly say no to? He’s about to get fired. Does he have a great buyout at Cal?

They’re not talking about it now. George said in there that they wanted Wilcox to get an interview. They didn’t want the band from Cal to come but for him to be surrounded by some recruiters. So, he said no to Oregon but it wasn’t like he was given full autonomy.

This sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Did Cristobal have full autonomy?
