Never was a fit. He can stomach Alabama more so than Cajun/Creole/ S. La culture. Power brokers at LSU loved his success, did not like his need for control. Skip respected and tolerated at first then got into a ego war post 2003. He was a fish out of water. Him asking for his old job back in Fall of 2006 was pure desperation and despondence over failing at NFL.
When Bama job opened up and it was clear their money power were not sold on Rich Rod he jumped at it. He knew all about the unfair advantages Bama has and knew they were desperate. He could get complete control of that program and become Alabama football personified. Their hero worship culture and fanaticism feed his enormous ego. There are a few idiots in our fan base like that. But the cynical nature of La. would call out his BS the more he continued on as HC if he stayed. Saban would not had enjoyed as much success at LSU as he has with Bama. Never would have been totally satisfied or even as tireless as he is now. He is content since he is absolute control - control any LSU AD or the BOS would never grant him.
We need a HC who can jive with the local flavor and is not so much a control freak. That just can't sit well with LSU money people. It just doesn't. What he gets away with at Bama would never work at LSU. I think LSU can find such a coach that is a good fit, can adapt and win at a high level. It's just a shame that Saban was a lousy long term fit and just a good short one. LSU is looking for that legacy coach. Miles came close but flamed out in the end when he could not adjust with the times.

Fit sure, but not to that extent
Jerry Stovall "fit" at LSU. He's in our Hall of Fame even. He wasn't a good coach.

no we don't
LSU needs a coach who can develop the QB, recruit, maintain top defenses, beat bama, and compete for national titles. That's it. How he fits in with LA culture is irrelevant as it gets.

This is funny because Freeze was actually the recruiting coordinator for Orgeron at Ole Miss.

He recruited better than his predecessor Cutcliffe:
2002: 26th
2003: 32nd
2004: 39th
and 15 of the 21 players in the 2004 class even made it to campus. That is what he had to play with. His top class just started to play when he got fired.
Back then, it was remarkable to get a 17th ranked class at Ole Miss. So I would not discount what he did in recruiting there.
His failures there were:
1) fans never got behind him and made fun of him and his antics. So no buy-in at all
2) he was like Miles, stubborn. He tried to control the program and run an USC type offence with recruits not geared for that.
3) he changed too late bringing Freeze to run the offence in a different style.
He needed more time to build his team there, but was not going to get it without fan support which he never had.
It seems like he has learned his lessons (ie USC & LSU) to allow the experts to do their jobs with the talent they got. Let him finish the year and then judge, nothing less would be unfair to him and the team.
