Fickell Pros: Defensive mastermind, strong HC record, extensive exp. in coaching 4-3 LBs, worked under Urban Meyer and Mel Tucker
Fickell Cons: Will be expensive, will have issues recruiting in the SEC, competition leap

Tucker Pros: Defensive mastermind, elite SEC recruiter, extensive exp. in coaching DBs in the 3-4, NFL DC exp., worked under Kirby and Saban, will bring the 3-4 defense back to LSU
Tucker Cons: Moved around alot, weak HC record, will be expensive

Aranda Pros: Defensive mastermind, extensive exp. in coaching 3-4 LBs, will bring the 3-4 defense back to LSU, knows the current administration and coaching staff, will be cheapest option
Aranda Cons: poor/moderate recruiter, not very intense, weak HC record

Everyday on this ‘Coaching Changes’ board people go back and forth about Riley, Kiffin, and Napier but fail to realize the HCs that consistently dominate this conference are defensive. Kirby and Saban are undefeated against Riley and Kiffin and yet that’s who everybody wants.

If Tucker finishes out this season with 2 losses or less he will be announced as LSU’s next HC on Nov. 30.

I'd be perfectly fine with Tucker, but I think napier is more likely. Oddly enough I feel the same about Tucker's potential here as I do Riley's.

There’s not a lot of faith amongst the administration that Napier can replicate his Sun Belt success to the SEC. Napier needs to prove he can recruit and coach at the Power 5 level before being considered for a job at LSU. He should go to Texas Tech.

Did I stutter?

This was spread by the orgeron camp to position orgeron ahead of Aranda when miles was fired.

A guy like Aranda doesn’t stay in college if he hates recruiting. Also you can look at his 247 list and see the elite talent he pulled in

I’ve heard the exact opposite

I think it’s easier to find a good OC than a good DC in college. I’d be happy with an Aranda hire.

Man, shut up.

It’s a true statement regardless of whether it was said for benefit or not. Nobody believes Aranda is an elite recruiter including himself. That’s just not his makeup; constantly being on the phone and texting kids. He is elite in other areas.

If LSU hires Aranda you can expect schools like Michigan, Penn State, and Ohio State to be camping out here regularly.

The only place you hear the opposite in on TigerDroppings. Otherwise you’d hear him being considered for the USC job.

Napier has never led a Power 5 program. By “coach and recruit”, I mean as a HC, not a position coach.

Defensive mastermind

Stop peddling the unfounded lie that Tucker is a defensive mastermind. He was a defensive disaster with the Bears, when he fielded one of the worst defenses in franchise history, and the worst in the league for two consecutive seasons. He also got blown out in several games last season. Jesus.

So now we’re comparing college success to NFL success? The NFL has roster constraints. Players are selected by a General Manager. You dealing with grown men making millions.

As a college DC, Tucker’s headed up two different SEC defenses to multiple championship games.

Aranda has an outstanding OC with him right now with Jeff Grimes. He lit it up and BYU Broyles award finalist, made Zach Wilson into a Heisman Finalist and a #2 overall pick and has made Baylor offense one of the best in the country. 3rd in yards per play. Top 10 in offensive efficiency.

Yet those 2 defenses he coached to national championship games dont miss a beat without him. Maybe its because no matter who is Smarts DC, his defense will be good because its Smarts defense, not his DCs.

I definitely prefer Napier over Tucker if we miss out on (apparently the two) "white whales", but I never understood why this board melts so hard about Tucker. He's shown to be a really good head coach so far in his career and Michigan State fans would be pissed if we take him which is always a good sign. His transfer portal work this season proves he knows exactly how to make a well balanced team unlike a certain recently fired coach, and honestly that+his recruiting prowess with LSU's recruiting footprint should be enough to be competing for a natty every couple of years.

Well, I actually have a guess why this board melts at the mention of the name.

This goes to prove my point about hiring a Defensive HC. People are hung up on Tucker’s HC exp. but Kirby didn’t even have HC exp. When UGA plucked him away.

If you can hire a coach that can replicate Saban/Kirby defenses and also understands their recruiting tactics why would you pass on that?

You can’t gloss over the fact the Bears were a top 5 defense before he arrived, then they were historically bad for Tucker’s two seasons, then they immediately improved once he was gone.

Tucker was DC at UGA under Kirby. You’re inflating his resumé if you’re giving him credit for Alabama’s defenses. He was a position coach at Bama.

Can he replicate them tho? That's a big if. Smart was Sabans DC for 7 years. Tucker was Smarts for 2. Not exactly the same. And he never was Sabans DC.

I will never compare NFL exp to college. Like I said before there are far more variables that come in to play when coaching an NFL team. That said, he was a failure as the Bears DC. But I’m knit going to hold that against him as a college HC. If we’re looking at NFL coaching records why Kiffin being considered after what he did in Oakland?

Yes, Tucker was Associate HC and DB coach Saban at Bama.
