Plenty of good coordinators make terrible head coaches.

quote:Good point. However that only happens when the coordinators are not ready. With the experience Chryst has and his jump into the Pittsburgh deep end three years ago (with Alvarez's encouragement), he's as ready as he'll ever be. The proof is always in the results, but under these circumstances you have to agree he's the best guy for Madison right now.

Barry will run him off soon enough

quote:Northern Illinois talent has been enough to beat schools from the B1G in the past. Wisconsin should be fine with Chryst as head coach as long as they get to play in the B1G.
A lot of Wiscosnin high school kids that go to Northern Il. will instead go to Wiscosnin now and that will weaken the talent on the roster.

Crazy he'd take that job when he left knowing Alvarez wouldn't give raises to keep assistants.
He'll get a fat check for himself and bank that for 3-4 seasons then take a job where can be successful down the road.

Why are Arky fans so obsessed with what Whisky does? I know BB coached there, but damn. Strange fan base.

Because we wanted Chryst to be our OC

Why are Auburn fans so obsessed with what Arkansas fans do? Seems even more strange.

No way, no way.
I mean, this isn't like some coordinator that has never been a head coach. This guy was being a head coach, and he sucked at it!
What they SHOULD have done is what they did last time- scour the country for another up-and-coming mid-major coach. Make Justin Fuente say no.
This was a SAFE hire, a suck-your-thumb hire. Good thing their division sucks or they might actually have to pay for this mistake.

He is only the "best guy" for Wisconsin because nobody else that isn't in the "Wisconsin family" cares about the job. Barry ended up hiring a 500% coach from Utah State for crying out loud after several coaches around the country had zero interest in talking about the Wisconsin job.
For outsiders the Wisconsin job is a stepping stone job and most people do not care about the job.
Wisconsin has never been a nationally elite program and never will be. They will be stuck in the 7 to 9 win range for a long time unless they go back down to the 3 to 6 win mark in the coming decades.

So they're essentially what people want Arkansas to be
Or at least the people who fear the rise of tFlagship want us to be that

And all he has to do is beat 2 mabe 3 teams in the league to be above average. And I don't think UW has to play Mich.State or Ohio State every yr, Neb. mabe, so his road to success is not really that hard. They open with bama next yr according to Finebaum, so we'll see early just how good they really are.

quote:I honestly don't know how good Chryst is or is not as a HC. But the fact is, Pitt is a bottom tier D1 program and has been for 20+ years. They've had double digit wins once since Sherril left there in the early 80s. They've been a 6-6, 7-5 program since.
No way, no way.

And while this seems like a silly comparison, Nick Saban's record at MSU wasn't any better after 3 years than Chryst's at Pitt.

Gary was a great hire when it was made. He made splashes at Utah State, and was on many up-and-comer lists. His recruiting at Wincy should some of the reason for that hype. My understanding is that GA had nothing to do with Wincy before that. In fact my understanding is he barely left Utah prior to the hire.
Wincy didn't play it safe with GA, which I applaud. Then they got burned because of it and fell back to a safe hire.

With this hire it shows Wisconsin has decided it isn't a national championship wannabe program. Wiscosnin is the new Iowa.
Someone is still angry about the arse kicking they received at the hands of Wisconsin.
