We will very likely be in the same situation with him and the NFL within 5 years.

I hope so because that means he won a ton of games

Not just in conference, your longest rival and a permanent opponent

So just give up on the whole season then, right?

Take what you can. That’s all I’m saying. These opportunities don’t come very often.

How does this work logistically? Do you just not hire a head coach until after the CFP and (both LSU and OM) miss this early recruiting cycle? Lane can't be employed by both teams and LSU isn't going to wait until January for Lane's signature.

The Saban illustration doesn’t fit! The Dolphins were not one of LSU’s oldest and fiercest rivals!

This. If 2004 Saban was in the playoffs (he’s basically their Saban at this point), and said “I’m going to Miami, but I’d like to finish the season”… why wouldn’t you want your best chance at winning?

Going to the NFL is one thing, going to a neighboring state and coaching a team we all hate would be a whole different universe. Don’t think I’d want a coach to hang around if he ditched us for say Alabama.

Man, he’s willing to walk out on them after an 11-1 season. I don’t think that would go over well with any of them knowing he’s out. This is not a shot at you personally at all, but I just don’t think LSU fans in general would want this if the roles were reversed with a coach leaving for Bama for instance (yes, I’m a logical OM fan & realize LSU is a better job which is why I chose Bama in that scenario).

ETA: You edited, so I will too. The next coach can retain some of these guys whoever it is. NIL dollars are real, so taking Lacy from OM for instance could happen, but I’d tend to believe he’d agree to the bigger payday. Would that be OM or LSU? Time will tell.

Fair point. I’d still want a championship. At that point we were in your shoes with not having a national championship since around 1960 (‘58 for us, ‘60 for you). One national championship completely transformed our image to the point where the 2 subsequent coaches could win one and we were putting more players in the NFL than the rest of the country.

Will Kiffen win at ole miss this year? Who knows. But the chances of yall winning the big one is greater with him than some interim.

It does, though. As mentioned in my previous post, it transformed the program for generations.

I think it’s pretty obvious from LSU’s handling of this situation - ignoring the shocking impatience of folks on this board - that Verge and co. are absolutely willing to wait.

The logistics are unfortunate, but coaching hires still do happen as late as January. This is the early phase of the coaching carousel. There will be options, and Ole Miss has an opportunity to market itself as a great location.

If you remember LSU pre-Saban, you’d want the NC regardless.

Of course it’s all hindsight and there wasn’t a certainty that he’d win until he did.

If the shoe were on the other foot I would absolutely let him coach LSU in the playoffs. No question.

Which is why you aren’t and never will be close to executive decision making.

Dumb thread. The atmosphere would have been shite.

Now the players will work their arse off to win it all to make Kiff feel like shite, and I’m fine with Kiffin leaving to take care of his own with money like that.

OM decided they won’t be cuckholds here. It’s not bitch made. It’s respectable.

Exactly, if wants out, make him leave. Do not let him tamper with the team. No way lsu would let their coach continue coaching for 3+ weeks after he signed with Bama or Florida. That’s idiotic. Be realistic and admit that Jimmy Sexton is influencing the TV personalities

He's not asking to work the LSU job AND coach in the playoffs. He's asking to accept the LSU job for NEXT YEAR, and finish THIS YEAR with his current team.

tampering with current ole miss players is really the only problem with this scenario. Doesn't really apply to the Saban situation.

And what's their future when he's gone? If they don't let him coach and they don't win they will spend decades wondering if they might have gotten that ring if only Lane had been allowed to coach.

All of that other shite works if you're some kind of national powerhouse with reason to be proud. They haven't sniffed an NC in 65 years.
