I don't remember that at all. And by "top notch," we can assume you mean coaches that you liked. 2 NFL washouts who were totally humiliated by the pro game and 1 coach who was in the middle of a playoff run with an NFL team. Did anyone really think any of those guys were gonna be our coach? I sure didn't.
Miles' resume at OSU > Chizik's at ISU by a long shot. Miles had more success at Okla State than Jimmy fricking Johnson did before he was hired by Miami

Yeah I remember people saying Nick Saban wasnt going to be a good coach at all because he was an alright coach at Michiga St.

For all of you that are making fun of Auburn for not getting a top notch coach, look at your own team. LSU couldn't land a topnotch coach a year after a National Championship.
We quickly forget how we've been shunned and begin to elevate our program to a status we aren't at. We aren't the Mecca of programs that coaches have been dying to come to.

please show me one fact that shows that we have the ability to land a coach that is better than any of the ones that we've ever landed.

I agree, and I would like to add that LSU is the only big boy in the talent rich state LA.
LSU is a top 8 job IMHO. AU top 25...
the problem AU has is Nick Saban, who wants to play little brother to him for instate recruits? Tough gig for AU right now...
Also, getting coaches available, from a timing stand point is very very difficult. If Butch Davis wasn't burnt out from the Cleveland job, he would most likely be at LSU.
Davis is an elite coach IMO...Anyone seen his latest class ranking coming in? top 10! From little ole Basket ball school UNC..

Please give an example of a top-notch program luring a top-notch coach. Let's see if any football powers have done this. Of the current ranking football powers:
Oklahoma - Stoops was a DC at Florida
Texas - Brown was a coach at UNC that had never won a championship
USC - Carroll has been discussed
OSU - Tressel was in I-AA
LSU - Miles brought a lot of success to success-starved Ok St
Georgia - Richt was an OC at Florida State
Florida - Meyer had four years of impressive coaching in the lower ranks (Bowling Green and Utah)
None of these hires would seem to meet your criteria, yet they are all very successful. The two cases I can think of are Alabama and Michigan. But Alabama had to pay an insane amount to get Saban and Rodriguez was loooking to leave WV to improve his status.

I wasn't thrilled with Saban's hire at LSU because, by pure chance, I had followed his career at Michigan State just to compare him to DiNardo, who had been hired at LSU at the same time.
While DiNardo brought back "The Magic" to LSU and notched a 10-win season and a win over #1 Florida, Saban had a string of very mediocre seasons, and even got blown out head-to-head versus DiNardo. Saban's last year at MSU was his best, having beat Notre Dame, Michigan and Ohio State all in the same year. The problem with that was that all three of those teams had less-than-average seasons by their standards.
When Saban came in at LSU and lost to UAB, I considered his hire a failure. That was back on the AOL Message Boards, for those who remember. So, there.
With Miles, he was touted because he was able to get Ok. State to a bowl. I guess that makes Gundy a friggen genius.
