Lots of reasons, I'll bullet point them.

- Too arrogant to realize his HC is serious about leaving.

- Grossly underpays good assistants yet pays self over $1Million annually

- Maxed coordinators out at $225K/year; pays self $118K to coach Rose Bowl with a $50K win bonus.

- Publically stated he'd interview Chris Petersen, never got a return phone call.

- Al Golden would rather get hammered by the NCAA than work with Alvarez.

- Refuses to consider Paul Chryst because Pitt has been a stepping stone the last 5 years.

- Throws Paul Chryst under the bus, by saying he "pulled a lot of strings to get him that job".

- per Pete Roussel, Oregon State AD has NOT been contacted about Mike Riley interviewing with Wisconsin.

- Telling Tim Brando he's going to let the assistants do almost all of the preparation and game planning. (remember he won't pay them over $200K, but will be paying himself almost $170K if they win the Rose Bowl)

- Barry Alvarez names his #1 target for the HC job...... Barry Alvarez.

- Wisconsin is officially the last school to hire a HC. It's bad when Western Michigan, UTEP, and Temple can attract an NFL coach and a Big 10 school can't.

more to come!

I never really understood the media types that were acting like Bielema spurned Alvarez and was the bad guy in this situation. Alvarez really gave him no choice because he was not allowing him to be competitive in hiring assistants.

Are we sure Golden isn't doing his best Houston Dale impression this offseason? Dude's been downright meh at Miami but his name has been floated for multiple jobs.

I guess because he was at a BIG10 school and I guess he is the first coach to voluntarily leave one for another job since?

No idea who the last coach was. I know Zook and Rodriguez was fired for losing, Tressel for NCAA issues, but I can't recall a BIG10 coach leaving for another school.

It can't be because a BCS conference coach left for another school or you would be hearing about Jones to UT or Tubs to Cinci.

Its only poaching because a SEC school, where winning is all that matters, took a coach from the most storied and prestigious conference in the country where winning matters but academics are also important.

Alvarez and the BIG10 schools are "above" poaching.

I think Golden has done a pretty good job with what he received. I think that dude would kill it at an SEC school.

The NCAA heat sucks for him but 6 and 7 wins in the crappy ACC is nothing to write home about. He's at Miami not Duke. Their talent isn't what it was but there's more than enough to get to that many wins without breaking much of a sweat.

Bielema did what Alvarez done in less than half the time. Both had 3 Big Ten Titles and 3 Rose Bowl appearances.

... yet he had a better record than Saban

ETA: Oh and how many Rose Bowls did Saban go to? You'll have to refresh my memory. Obviously a coach such as Saban would have at least 2

In all fairness, the Wisconsin program was shite before Alvarez came along. He built the Badgers into a force in the Big 10 before giving the keys to Bielema. So you're comparing apples to oranges.

His last 3 years of 7 have been his best, after he got all his own players in

Only cause Alvarez was in a position to recruit full time these past three years.

He was too busy WINNING bowl games, not just attending them. They also happened to be national championships as well.
