Nobody really knows what type of coach will be successful in the NIL era

You can sit here worried about all the big openings and there not being enough good coaches to pick but the truth is nobody has a clue which coaches are going to win the NIL era.
Even the big money donors and athletic directors dont know what type of guy is going to make it work.
So if the big names go elsewhere dont be afraid to take a chance on a guy thats less experienced.
I think the "program builders" ala Saban, Kelly, etc. Are not going to cut it in this era.
I also caution against guys like Kiffin who will probably come with a high price tag but isnt necessarily going to last as this new era continues to evolve.

Meyer recently talked about why he didn't feel he could be successful today but it was the portal not NIL that gave him reservations.

The coaches with the biggest bag for players provided they are competent.

Number 1 requirement is talent evaluations and adaptability.
You can’t afford to miss and lose your investments. You can’t get hamstrung by your system. If you have a great OL and a great running game, You can have a less mobile QB. But a bad OL and a statue you better be willing to pivot very quickly.
That’s all I would look at, your success in finding all conference performers and your ability to produce offense with different skill sets.

Unfortunately players coaches have the best chance to thrive with the players having 100% leverage
The old school hardass guys like Dabo, Gundy etc don’t very far in this climate

I think “system builders” rather than program builders will thrive and prosper. They must have a base system as a foundation and be able and willing to plug and play from one year to the next based on the available talent in HS recruits and th portal. They must also- and here’s the key- be able and have staff who are able to tweak the system from one year to the next based on who is on the roster.
This is a lot more of a malleable and changeable mindset than in the past and will require more resources- financially, yes, but also mental and physical resources on the part of the coach. More hours will be spent working on their “system” than required in the past.
The successful coach will also need to depend on a GM who knows what the coach needs in players and handles much of the identification, recruitment, and compensation of players. This allows the HC to be more of a closer in recruiting. This will require absolute trust and teamwork to work.
Just my .02. I might be completely wrong in what will work in today’s la escape. Not to mention 2 years from now it’s likely to look a lot different- just look back over the last 2 years at the changes.

Young coaches as well that can relate more to the players. You’ve seen this in the NFL. I think Sean McVay was 33 when he got the head coaching job with the Rams.

Let's not kid ourselves anymore...the portal has EVERYTHING to do with NIL...as players will enter the portal to seek out more opportunities/NIL elsewhere.
Saban said the same thing about NIL not being the issue...but players are coming and going PRECISELY because of NIL which is tied to playing time.
Saban, Meyer, Kelly, Gundy, Franklin, etc. Cant build a culture with the large amount of roster change every 2 years. You need a completely different type of guy.

It’s basically pro ball in college. You might as well have them sign contracts. At least that way we may get to some sanity as far as the portal.

If course you do. It needs to be a Coach that has Coached with NIL. Period.
